Oil Train incident near Glasgow

From the footage, it looks as if the Fire Service is having difficulty reaching the scene...

It's at Stewarton, so Kilmarnock services are affected. Buses replacing trains Barrhead-Kilmarnock. In theory, trains should be able to run Kilmarnock-Ayr and Carlisle, but I'm not sure if the services will be running; obviously you need the stock available to run the trains.

Nationalrail website says Glasgow - Carlisle trains are being diverted via Barassie, presumably reversing there, and again at Kilmarnock.

Fire appeared to be out by 12 noon, went a drive to Stewarton since I was at my girlfiends in Kilmaurs. Lucky this never happened at the weekend, Could have happend to one of the West Coast Pendos being diverted down this line.

Not sure what you mean by that, the cause is obviously under investigation.

Could have been a passenger train of any type. An overbridge collapse will be the centre of the investigation. All we can be thankful about is no-one was hurt.

It says on the BBC that the train may have hit a fallen electricity pylon on the bridge. If the bridge had failed I cant really see how it would have bought the pylon down but no doubt it will come out in the enquiry. Hope nobody is injured.

Glasgow's Evening Times is reporting that some of the rear wagons derailed, then hit and brought down power lines, and then an underbridge collapsed...

That's got to be an early contender for Scottish News Picture Of The Year...

EDIT: Please correct me if I'm wrong, but looking at the news photographs and video, this incident seems to have happened in the vicinity of a Network Rail work site - there seem to be new track panels nearby, and that temporary blue fencing stuff, and lifting equipment already on site... but, please, correct me if I'm wrong... (images from Evening Times):

FURTHER EDIT at 1612: BBC Scotland's Lunchtime news report suggested that the bridge, which was due to undergo work next week, collapsed first...

You are not wrong, they are doubling the track in the area. If you look on the national rail website that very stretch of track was due to be closed this weekend for work.

I understand from news sources that the bridge would have been replaced this weekend (I don't know if that is fact or media speculation)

Network Rail dismisses safety fears
after cutting 2009 renewals by 28%


I suspect that this incident is going to be referred to as one of the consequences of the funding spat between Network Rail and the DfT...

Wouldn't have hit a Pendolino. They're being terminated at Oxenholme and passengers bussed to connections at Lockerbie.

As I understand it the funding issues relate to CP4 which doesnt start until April. As this bridge was due to be replaced next weekend its difficult to see how it was affected.

Until last weekend, we had 2 northbound 57+390 drags on Sunday Evenings between Carlisle, and Glasgow Central via the Glasgow South Western line, one leaving at around 20:15-20:25, the other leaving around 21:15-21:25.

Just meant if the bridge did collapse under one of the drags it could have been a more serious incident casualty wise. Although as Failed Unit said it could have been any passenger train.
