Engineering Works Between Llandudno Junction and Chester

While planning a future trip I noticed for that most Sundays in February and March Network Rail are carrying out engineering work between Llandudno Junction and Chester all day Sunday, closing the line. There is also a weekend closure 25-26 March.


I was wondering where I could find details of the work being done. I searched here and didn't find anything. Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place.

As far as I know, there are two main projects on the North Wales Coast line at present:-

The removal of the down platform loop at Abergele and the widening of the existing platform to reach what was the down through line;

The creation of a new loop at Mostyn.


These two, plus routine relaying and maintenance.

Is that going to be the only loop between Saltney and Rhyl?
Replacing the entire layout at Holywell Jn?

Yes, and the crossovers at Rockcliffe Hall move to Flint. Mostyn loop will be much longer than the ones at Holywell at 800 odd metres.

As the new loop at Mostyn is on the up side, will it be bi-directional, with the associated crossovers, or just for up traffic?

[Also, but out of the scope of the original question, do you know if the emergency frame and crossover at Lysfaen is scheduled to remain, or be removed?]

What's the current expected date for the Chester to Llandudno Junction resignalling?

And will it include the Llandudno branch?

Mostyn is bi di but a bit slow as 25mph. March 2018 is the date I have for commissioning but subject to change. Lysfaen stays. Talacre goes. Doesnt do the branch, Lysfaen is the limit.

Thanks for all the replies. Exactly what I was looking for.

I had too look Mostyn up. Have to admit I was relieved that it is a long closed station.

I had too look Mostyn up. Have to admit I was relieved that it is a long closed station.

It is, but freight access to the docks was retained.
Not sure if that will be retained in the remodelling.
The local signal box recently closed.

The footbridge is being replaced or renovated.
