Not sure what you mean here?

Are you suggesting that the TOC's should allow people to evade their fare every so often, but are too greedy to do so?

No, that they should let the odd one evade.

Dunno who he is, though.

Parking, A good honesty test for people who decry others is to ask if they would pay at a pay and display car park if they were only going to be there for 2 mins and there was no sign of a traffic warden. When you consider it some of the defences used are very similar to the railway, eg. it doesn't cost any more if I use it or not.

It is still theft to do this however and deprives operators of revenue.

Really. How much do car parking companies pocket from people who don`t have the correct change, extortionate pricing and ridiculous parking fines. Wouldn`t you class that as theft.

No, it is not quite obviously not theft.

I think you just failed the test.

They sound very like the excuses fare dodgers use.

Nonsense. It is theft only not legal terminology. Private parking fines are theft and not enforceable. Since when do private parking companies contribute anything to car park upkeep. Rail ticket fraud is completely different. Besides Most private parking companies are crooked anyway.

When I have paid rent for a reserved bay the freeloaders who park in it are the thieves.

I think you'll find the Supreme Court has ruled that private parking charges very much are enforceable.

That's exactly what fare dodgers (and some others) say about rail companies.

Whether it's true or not does not change your moral obligation to pay for a service.

If they illegally charge you that's a different matter, but not what philthetube was asking about.

All very well but paying £2.00 odd for 2 minutes. If you had someone in the car with you are you still telling me you wouldn`t be tempted to leave them in the car and not bother paying.. Moral obligation maybe but human nature? Does that put anyone up there with serial killers or dictators?
As to the other point of private parking companies I may have strayed from Philthetubes original comment and for that I apologise.

In rare cases maybe but that depends on the judge. In most cases PPC`s won`t bring any cases to court as they know they`ll get sweet fanny adams. They know it`ll get thrown out. Different with Council run car parks. APCOA the company that privately runs most rail car parks never bother with tickets.

I`ve never known of a PPC getting away with this.

Irrelevant post really so Irrelevant point but how much do the railway companies benefit by not selling the cheapest ticket?

A lot, but that's legal. They also benefit massively by threatening people with valid tickets into buying a new one, either through institutional malice or institutional incompetence.

How can anyone take your argument seriously with a comment like that? No one forces you to use any car park but if you do why should you not pay for the use of the facility. Did you ever consider that in those two minutes someone else make have been unable to find a parking space because of your selfishness? Perhaps you think a very short bus ride should also be free.

How about it's it's 17:58, parking charges end at 18:00, and the car park is empty. Do you pay? Do you keep driving round wasting fuel and destroying the planet?

I don't see the difference between paying (or not) for 2 minutes at 17:58 or at 13:58

The "special pleading" is suddenly throwing in a particular and very limited scenario when it is clear the argument is lost. If that time slot had been the basis for the original complaint then the discussion would have taken a different course but as it is we were discussing the general case not a specific one.

Why do you think you should be allowed to park on someone else's private property without paying? Can I park in your front garden?

So you`ve destroyed the planet for an extra two minutes, we can live with that mate, lol

No, it was driving to and from the car park that "destroyed the planet" and from what I see of many drivers if the stop was only two minutes the engine was probably left running. By the way I speak as a car owner and driver who always pays for the privilege of using a car park.

Why don`t people get their facts correct before copying someone else's thread. Where did I say any of this.

Interesting the self righteousness of people on here who see themselves as moral guardians of truth and justice over 2 minutes in a car park. Yeah, I admit I wouldn`t pay it and so would they given the option. It`s human nature for gods sake. So what. On another thread one of the well known users of this forum states people who travel on buses are oiks and plebs. No one says a thing. People are wetting themselves with fury over 2 minutes free in a pay car park though and your labelled alongside Pinochet. Anyone can be a paragon of virtue from the comfort of behind a keyboard

I think you're getting a little over excited. The only parallels that have been drawn are with bus and rail tickets, not murder or dictatorship. As it happens, I was recently parked in a car park from 2350 to 0300. Parking was free between midnight and 0600. I did pay my 50p for 10 minutes parking as that was the fee for the service we used. I've not seen the other thread and don't see what it's got to do with this.

As far as I can tell, you're arguing that car drivers shouldn't be fined by private parking companies. This means they can park for free. Don't you think that's a terrible situation?

Yes, because private parking companies are shysters and yes. It is extortion. Try reading a bit on the subject. I`m not talking about those who own the car parks it`s the excuses that pass for companies who run them sticking on fines that should be illegal.

Not all of them.

Why is paying a couple of quid for parking extortion?

Do you generally use the services of companies you don't like without paying?
