Two southbound Virgin EC trains lost pantographs apparently.

Just on Cross Country Class 221 (1508 Edinburgh-Plymouth) being set back towards Darlington prior to possible use of bi-directional working...

Ah, was just about to ask what was going on, was starting to suspect that a southbound dewirement had occurred. 13:45 Reading - Newcastle has terminated in platform 1 at York, so it's fortunate that's as far as I was travelling on that train.

Curious to know if the 18:33 Crosscountry HST to Glasgow will run as normal, or whether catching the 18:41 Grand Central HST would be a better bet to reliably get me to Sunderland.

Seems to me that the problem is getting worse, if thats possible in a situation like this! It's hard to deduce exactly from the info available, but......

Looks like 1E19 (1430 ex Edinburgh) stopped at Longlands Jcn and Doncaster thunderbird has been sent to rescue.

1S23 (1530 ex Kings Cross) was allowed into the area but has stopped just north of Thirsk.

1Z99 (Thunderbird) is currently moving from the down to the up and Thirsk, to run wrong line to 1E19 and rescue.

1S24 (1600 ex Kings Cross) was put on the slows at Thirsk to pass 1S23.

Anything diesel (northbound) has so far been allowed to pass the area, 1S24 as noted above and a couple of Crosscountry services not long after the incident started. Not sure if this will continue, guess it depends on what repairs are required?

All southbound that were queuing behind 1E19 are being sent back to Darlington from what I can see.

From NRE: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_disruptions/today.aspx
The overhead electric wires have been damaged near Northallerton. Trains between Newcastle and York are expected to be disrupted until the end of service today.
The following alterations currently apply:
Trains from York towards Northallerton may be delayed by up to 20 minutes as a speed restriction is in place
Trains from Northallerton towards York are unable to run
Virgin Trains East Coast services may terminate at Darlington and restart from York
Road transport has been requested to operate between York and Newcastle / Middlesbrough

Juat given up and headed for the last express bus from Newcastle to Durham. Nothing had gone south from NCL since 17;00 - while this sort of thing is rare so I don't want to complain too much, I can't understand operationally why a TPE train can't shuttle Newcastle-Durham given its peak commuting time!

Seems as though it was let through, are you on it? :)
18:33 arrived in York ahead of time as it turns out, but after seeing the number of folk looking to board it, desperately wanting to reach Darlington, Durham, Newcastle and points further north, I decided to swerve it, hedge my bets and catch the direct Grand Central train eight minutes later, a pint the better off thanks to the wares of The York Tap. :)

Just as well for those folk that did want ECML destinations going north, as an announcement from the East Coast electric set directly opposite, that was due to depart northbound at 18:36, suggested that their stay may be indefinite.

But now it seems you are going anything but direct.......

Don't rub it in, they've only just made the announcement that we're going via Darlington anyway ;): I wondered why we were still going at such a pace north of Northallerton, we get a bonus jolly via Teesside Airport now! Still, on the bright side, they announced that they'd be closing the buffet at Eaglescliffe, so there's additional time to get another beer in. :)

Apparently 5E20 (Scotrail 320) on Shields depot to Doncaster also lost it pantograph crossing from the fast to slow lines and will be hauled by the Doncaster thunderbird which will run to the stranded 320 via Neville Hill to pick up Northerns emergency coupler

Donny thunderbird collected 1E19 and is now heading south.

As per the document above, DRS apparently have something en-route for the 320.

Yeah that's what I meant to say just mixing up the rescue mission

Looks like Chaos. I arrived into Darlington from Doncaster only 15 late at 17:30. 1E21 sat across from us heading south finally departed 152 late - as an electric set I wonder if it's dragged...

Whatever power its under, it only went 5-6 miles, stood at the Cowton crossovers.

Edit: Moving again.

Do all multiple units no longer have an emergency coupler onboard as standard equipment?

There are always DRS locos stabled at York. Could these not be utilised to rescue stranded trains?

1E21 looks to still be moving. 1Y44 has just departed Northallerton (91/Mk4s to KGX booked at 17:15 running 209 late).

Looks like 1Y44 is returning north through the crossover at Longlands...

1Y44 has moved forward, crossed over and is now heading back north. VTEC Twitter confirmed earlier that it was to be terminated there.

Having started this thread it is only fair that I record that I got home safely only three and a half hours late. This was after encountering many rail staff who all displayed good humour and a determination to get passengers on their way.
A special thanks to those who organised a massive emergency rail replacement coach shuttle from Darlington to York. (That includes the coach drivers too, of course.)
It is always easy to nit pick but having had to face this kind of thing on the ground many times during my career it is good to see folk in all departments rising to the occasion once again.

Loking like 5E20 was the culprit. Running 2hrs early something happened to its pan as it crossed from up main to up slow at Northallerton. Before that driver had a chance to report the problem 1E19 following behind accelerating from its station stop at NTR then encountered the same OHLE issue which then took its pan head off. The two trains were effectively side by side on both up lines both with damaged pans and OHLE wrapped around them

Hopefully all should be well by then. Latest from Network Rail is that there is a possession until 0615 and one early morning Newcastle - London train is starting at York, apart from that everything should be back to 'normal'!

1E19 was first to go pop, folloŵed by 5E20. Be interesting to see what's said about why 5E20 entered the Up Slow adjacent to 1E19 as it had been confirmed there was possible OLE damage.

5E20 was instructed to move forward to do a track/overhead inspection, which is when it then lost its pan.
Agree questions should be asked about why an electric train was asked to inspect, when 1E19 had suffered loss of power which unknown at the time, could of been caused by overhead issues.

5E20 was authorised ro move to do an inspection of track, as at that moment 1E19 was only reported as loss of power.
As 5E20 moved and crossed it lost its pan, shortly after it was identified that 1E19 was also in a bit more trouble than just loss of power.

I wonder when the IEP is around if track inspections will be under diesel rather than electric traction. Just in case. However Sod's law will put an EMU as next in the queue...

They'd probably use their "last mile" engine through the affected area if this were the issue.

All running well this morning.

It is impressive the way that multiple agencies can respond immediately and resolve these issues in a matter of hours, late on a Monday evening and into the night.
