Google confirms, I've never been though.

These 'taxes' are often levied to finance specific projects, rather than as policy over the entire duration of airport operations. The last time you went there may well not have been a fee, and the next time you go there may be no fee, depending on their projects.

It is payable by passengers on all flights departing the airport.

It is not levied on arriving passengers - you may have arrived there?

The charge has been there for quite some years now.

D-AILL with Lufthansa and LN-DYE with Norwegian are my only potential new ones today. EI-DAD with Ryanair I saw yesterday.

So I paid £501 return from Heathrow to New York in BA's "sale" two weeks ago, now the same "sale" is still going on, but the exact planes are now around £445 return. How can they even get away with this? If they offer to refund me the difference that would be good.

Same as any business that offers further reductions in a sale.

Unfortunately you pay what's on offer at the time - not the price two weeks later.

Any business is free to alter prices when it so wishes.

Welcome to airline ticketing. If you thought train ticketing was complicated and full of loopholes, just wait until you find out what you can do with airline tickets.

Never look at flight prices until you're actually ready to book, and never look at them after, either...

It's a double edged sword really....

If you monitor prices regularly you know what a real bargain is having an idea of the normal going rate for a particular destination.

Sometimes "sales" are not all they appear to be.

First A350 at Manchester today. Singapore to Houston. Its a good looking plane but I do love the 777-300. Not too many of them flying in to Manchester these days which is odd for such a well used aircraft type. Just PIA and Etihad I think.

Not that odd, the 777-300 is a lot thirstier than the A350 and only works if you can guarantee it's nearly full every time it flies.

A350 and 787 are revolutionising the point to point travel scene as direct routes open at smaller airports.

BA fly the 787 to San Jose; I took this flight last year and it was wonderful. I was off the plane, through customs/border, collected bag and in an Uber in 15 minutes. It was a real head-spinner. I've resolved that for further trips out towards the Bay Area I'm always going to use San Jose.

It's a busy airport, but secondary. JFK has gone seasonal now from AA, probably as a retreat from the new Virgin daily service in conjunction with Delta.

There was talk for a while that Cathay might go daily with an A350 though this never really came to anything.

Was it on this forum that someone found that Manchester was the 20th busiest in Europe behind Oslo?

Which passenger aircraft makes the best sound, particularly at take off. For me the 777, even if it isn't my favourite aircraft. When it spools up for take off it sounds like some kind of mad siren going off.

Ha ha, I haven't had the pleasure yet and for a long haul flight I would prefer the journey was a bit quieter also. To be fair once we were cruising the level of noise on the 777 did my head in. Still, at take off it is immense.

Ehh. Even upstairs it's still definitely there as a background noise, does drone on after a while!

Still of the opinion that active noise cancelling headphones are the way to go! Though, obviously, have to fly long-haul enough to justify it.

I love mine. Only got a £30 set but they are amazing. On long flights I just listen to a long music mix somewhere deep in the audio selection and fall asleep.

Only limiting issue is having to carry them at the other end if we are lightweighting it.

Stuff paying £30! My £3 pair of earphones from Asda knock out a surprising amount of noise. Not as good as the pair I'd had before for £8 (which knocked out almost all the MK2 noise on the Cally Insomnie last time, which made them worth their weight in gold!) for noise cancellation, but still a good performance and I'd suggest trying them.

I'm still on the fence with my route of choice to Norway, I can see it being Ryanair but I'd love to fly from Heathrow. Never ever been airside there in the terminals. I've decided I'm not flying with Norwegian though!

I found the cabin noise in a 777 from Buenos Aires to Heathrow for 13 hours to be quite excessive. About 14 hours in an A340 from Auckland to Santiago was no where near as bad. I am guessing BA are using 777's on their new longest route from Heathrow to Santiago.

I agree. The A340 is much nicer plane to fly on than the 777.

You youngsters don't know what you missed in the past before your time... now if you were including extinct types for this question I would have to say things like the VC-10, Trident, Concorde... they all made proper noises on take off...

Before my time, anything piston powered would surely be worth listening to...

Indeed. Me and the ex were on the outer double seats at the back on an A340. For us it was like first class even back in cattle class.

Only ever had the joy of VC-10's, Tridents and Concorde from the outside. Loved the sound of the Trident starting up, a really unusual sound. Concorde and VC-10's were beasts. Noise galore. Also loved TU-154's.

Noise does depends a lot on how far forward you are. On a 747 if you're in row 1 or 2, or upstairs just behind the cockpit (row 60ish on ba), it can be pretty quiet, even without the noise cancelling headphones on. Stretch your legs and go back behind the wing (yes it does exist) and the noise increases a fair bit.
