Certainly was standing on steam trains but not on the s&c methinks. It was a very sparse service not well patronised.
I wasn't solely thinking of the S&C.

I'm top young to have travelled on regular timetables steam service. This seems like a good opportunity to do so. Might not happen again that soon I realise it's only for a few days but it's still in the regular timetable for some of the services and normal tickets permit travel.

In theory could the steam service go as fast as the DMUs? I understand platform lengths and running speeds would dictate things different in the real world.

Line speed is 60 mph, isn't it? Tornado can do 75 mph on Network Rail lines, except where otherwise restricted. so yes, it can go as fast at the DMUs.

Tornado is designed to be a 90 mpn loco. Which means, in practice, it could do 100 mph safely. As could all the Gresley-Peppercorn pacifics.

When I'm looking this up on National Rail Enquiries App, it doesn't show the stream services. Would it be possible to book an advance ticket from London to Appleby or Carlisle via Appleby that would allow travel on the steam service?

I've found an early morning service that would work, so long as I don't delayed anywhere of course. There doesn't seem to be any afternoon connections for the 15.07 departure but I'm sure it's possible on some more advanced than the official National Rail Enquiries App or Web Site.

If people think it best to open a new thread I will do so.

Does anyone know where the Mk2s are coming from? Will they be West Coast? Or are we to be treated to Mr Hosking's lovely blood and custard efforts?

I would have thought it would have been some of the finest Mk2 from a yard in Burton belonging to Rivera.

What forms of break can Tornado operate? Air and/or Vacuum?

In terms of Vacuum Mark 2s there is also the Vintage Trains rake.

It may be cheaper and more flexible to book a ticket to Leeds and buy the £15 Settle to Carlisle Day Ranger, (assuming its valid).

hopefully an on-train guide like myself onboard in each coach talking about sights along the route

Hopefully not. I've no interest in someone droning on and ruining the experience of viewscapes of which I'm perfectly capable of appreciating unaided. Babbling tour guides are acoustic pollution.

I guess Northern needed extra stock to run the reopened service, and given the alternative of class 37 haulage they chose the newer, more reliable traction........

I see that this event has now been widely announced. Generally confirms what has already been stated in this thread regarding timings and formation, and the Settle - Carlisle Railway site adds that "details have not yet been released about ticket prices and how to buy tickets" but that "full details will be published in local media and online in the next week or so".

After slogging their way up the long drag, I feel almost certain that "Tea" will be the favoured form of break for Tornado's crew. ;)

Surely ticket prices will be whatever is in force for services at the time the train is run. After all I thought this was a regularly timetabled service, excluding the two additional services of course.

Have you ever been on the S&C and seen the guides? The S & C volunteer guides are very respectful and discerning of who to talk to and who not to talk to. They won't bother you if you don't want to listen, but please show those who give up their own time to educate passengers about railways a modicum of decorum.

Hopefully, I will be able to have a trip on one of these services, it's very good of Northern to put them on.

This was my interpretation too. My Dales Railcard is at the ready! :)

Yes, at least certainly for the fireman!

It will be interesting to see whether they continue with the Day Ranger and its attractive price once the line is completely reopened.

Well unfortunately for you we've already got our names down for it! There's 64 seats in a MK2 TSO which I believe are being used. Why should the other 63 people onboard miss out on a unique experience, some of which may not get the chance to come back, just because you don't like it? Ok we're all entitled to our opinions and you've got a negative opinion about us, but it's quite simple really; don't listen or go somewhere else a bit quieter. We appreciate not everybody wants to hear it and we respect that. We don't mither people who aren't interested. All we're interested in is creating a bit of income for the volunteer side of the line and giving all of our passengers who take an interest a factual journey pointing out things not normally seen whilst at the same time trying to make it fun and get people involved!

Sorry for ranting on but what you said I found really disrespectful, especially given that we donate our spare time and in my case at least money to get there. It felt very devaluing.

I'm not usually one for guided tours etc, but I was on the S&C a few years ago and found the volunteer very interesting. It was deep snow (2011?) and surprisingly few people on the train so the guide just came and sat down near me and another couple.
Surely if you don't like it, then you can just not listen in, just as you wouldn't listen in on someone else's conversation.

I often wonder whether there would be scope for letting the guides speak through the PA, much as on those red open top busses, and advertising the train as such. This would, in my opinion, make it more of a marketable thing (not that it isn't already).

So will Tornado be the newest item of rolling stock Northern have used on scheduled services?

On a more serious note will the connecting service to and from Leeds be strengthened. I would expect that a lot of the people traveling on these services will pass through Leeds. 7 x Mk2s will not fit into a 2 coach 158 or even a 4 coach one which seems to be the usual S&C units. Or may be the connecting service will be EMU(s). If I can get tickets I am likely to be one of them traveling up from Leeds.

There are frequent 4 car EMUs from Skipton - Leeds

They can't really be - you may be able to run 4 car DMU, stock dependent, alongside the 4 car EMU's, but that will be about the limit - I don't think any/many stations can take a doubled up 333

I would expect the other 63 to think very much as I do, and would enjoy a peaceful journey in quiet contemplation. Remember - just because you, as a tour guide, likes talking, it doesn't mean we enjoy listening.

Booked tickets for the Tuesday. I will take one of the earlier Class 333 services from Leeds so I am more likely to a) get to Skipton and b) get a seat behind Tornado.

Well since you don't like us talking, then I'll stop. That also means the inside gen from me stops too!

Anyone else feel free to PM me and I'll be more than happy to provide inside information about it.

Don't let one miserable sod put you off. There are plenty of us who do appreciate the efforts of tour guides.

Thirded.

It's no wonder rail enthusiasts get a bad press, when they don't even like people talking to them about trains!

And that there is the joy of earplugs or headphones!

(I personally find it good to find that there's volunteers that are willing to give up their time to teach people about these lines, and feel it could be beneficial on other tourist oriented routes such as the West Highlands or Conwy Valley)
