Could you give us some a sample of your answers to the questions? People might be able to help you with why they didn't like your answers.

It could be the first section where I said neither agree or disagree for the majority, I know they hate that. Or one scenario springs to mind about top 3 and last 3 priorities, I can't really remember what I put though and if I'm honest I rushed through both parts not giving it much thought. So I recommend taking your time and imagining you're a driver with a manager breathing down your neck.

I've just left uni and hope to work in health science (Seeing as I've studied it for 4 years) and this was more of a 'what have I got to lose' application.

Hi folks

I've noticed that two questions are almost identical - on the supporting information it asks:

Now that you've read more about the job, please tell us why you're applying for it and what knowledge or skills you have that might be relevant.

Then on the competency questions page, again it asks:

Now that you have read about the role, can you tell us about your experience and skills and how they would be relevant to the role?

Obviously the second one doesn't ask for your motivation, but is it just me or are these two very similar? Only the first question is marked as required (*), and the second isn't. I don't really want to just paste a duplicate answer or repeat myself.

Why would you put something on your application knowing that they hate it ?

They do look very similar but I can see a subtle difference in what they are asking for. Potentially this is a cross checking question. It can easily be used to sift the blaggers out. I sat an MMI style interview a few months ago and there was quite a few cross checking questions. By the interviewers own admission too.

I managed to complete the questionnaire on the day it came out but was unsuccessful ''due to: Your Answers'' which I found quite blunt, yet funny. Although I was a bit surprised having previously answered the same questions for another TOC and passed.

Did you recieve a reply straight after doing the questionnaire? Or did you go ahead to complete the application form after aswell. Very strange you recieved a reply so soon after putting in an application before the closing date.

Is anyone else getting really frustrated with the application website?
I've managed to log onto the assessment only once, managed to nearly complete it, then get an error page!
Also now and again I get a "this job no longer exsists" page.

Yeah, website really frustrating - keep getting timed out - even as I submitted the assessment. Very poor - the website is about as reliable as their train service!

Is it their website or the opc?
Maybe so many people are trying to do assessment and the system can't cope?
Will try again later and let you know if I have succes.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Also I have past these tests in march last year with opc and chiltern so if anyone has any questions feel free to ask.

I put 4, 11, 15 for bottom
And
3, 5, and 10 for top.
My test this morning once completed loaded an error page, but after logging on tonight it must have saved as I've past.
Also has anyone noticed the job spec has changed slightly? As in depots etc?

I applied in October and was unsuccessful and one of the first questions is have your applied before in the last 6 months? Is it worth applying anyway?

You want to immediately set yourself up as someone who is dishonest and can't follow instructions? They aren't qualities they look for in prospective drivers.

Sit on your hands and wait your time.

Yes, I noticed that. They have taken away the depots and actually changed the qualified salary to 49k from circa 45k as per my question earlier in the thread.

I managed to get the application completed today, seemed to have "Passed" the questionnaire as I was allowed to completed the competency questions.

I have to agree with this; 'waiting your time' seems to be the only option. I applied to Thameslink before Christmas. I didn't get past the initial paper sift (and don't know the reason(s) why, maybe never will). Therefore, in the Southern trainee application, I have to answer the question

Have you previously applied for a Drivers role in the past 6 months and been unsuccessful at any stage of the recruitment process?

(my stress)

with a 'yes'.

Of course, that immediately rejects you from their application process:

We thank you for your interest in applying with us.
We are sorry to inform you that you do not meet the minimum criteria for this vacancy.

The reason for this is as follows:

Your Answers
Have you previously applied for a Drivers role in the past 6 months and been unsuccessful at any stage of the recruitment process? Yes

No mention is made of the fact that the previous application may have been with another TOC/franchise; in any case Southern and Thameslink are both part of GTR. So I have to be safe and assume that the TOC previously applied to is immaterial.

As others have mentioned on these fora in the past, applying to be a driver can be a very long process - you had better be committed to it for the long haul!

Southern Railway recruitment campaign branded `nonsense´ by drivers´ union
By PRESS ASSOCIATION
PUBLISHED: 18:59, 15 January 2017 | UPDATED: 18:59, 15 January 2017

Plans to recruit a pool of 200 “trainee” drivers to help improve services on Southern Railway have sparked a fresh row.

The Government is backing a recruitment campaign by Southern’s owners, Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), believing it will end the reliance on overtime.

Members of the drivers’ union Aslef are banning overtime in a dispute over driver-only trains, which is leading to services being cancelled or delayed every day.

A Department of Transport source said the Government will work with GTR to boost recruitment and train hundreds of drivers to cut the need for overtime.

The company will launch an advertising campaign on Monday.

The source said: “GTR has already embarked on the UK´s largest ever driver training programme as part of its objective to maintain a pool of 200 trainee drivers.”

Southern are urging people who want to work part time as drivers to apply, said the source.

More flexible working could open up careers to people from “all parts of society”.

The reliance on overtime has to stop, the Government believes.

Mick Whelan, general secretary of Aslef, said Southern had never employed enough drivers to fulfil its franchise commitments.

“That’s why the company is cancelling so many trains, after eroding the goodwill of its drivers, who are no longer working overtime.

“It is currently cancelling 25% of its services on non-strike days, because of our overtime ban.

“So it would need to recruit 300 more train drivers just to deliver the service it promised to deliver when it won its franchise.

“As for its plan to recruit a new pool of 200 trainees, I suspect, on cost, and retention of knowledge, it would be a nonsense.

“I see the hand of Chris Grayling (Transport Secretary) here, who wants a headline on a quiet Sunday, rather than a sensible plan to resolve the problem at the heart of this industrial dispute.

“And I wonder which trade union these new drivers would join?

“No one has to be a member of a trade union, but 96% of the train drivers in England, Scotland and Wales choose to belong to Aslef, so I look forward to these new drivers joining our trade union.”

A GTR spokesman said: “The campaign is a continuation of what is the UK´s largest recruitment campaign of train drivers ever undertaken to meet our ongoing objective to maintain a pool of 200 trainee drivers across the franchise.

“This helps us bring in new fleets of trains across Thameslink and Great Northern and reduce to a minimum our dependence on rest day working so that we can deliver a more consistent service for our passengers.”

Aslef members on Southern staged three strikes last week and are set to walk out for three more days later this month.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union are also embroiled in a dispute with Southern and will strike again later in January.

Is it asking if you have applied to southern or just any driver post from other TOCs?

I'd like to know that, too! Have just used GTR's online message system to ask the question, will post the reply here when I get it.

Also has anyone noticed the job spec has changed slightly? As in depots etc?

Not just slightly, IMHO. I find it fascinating to compare the original spec with the one that's currently published.

Location (was "MetroAll London Depots", now "Southern Routes"), increased salary, re-worded text, a delayed deadline for applications (now "24 Jan 2017 at 11:45PM") and the claim to be

the UK’s biggest ever driver training programme

Something significant changed over the past couple of days, I reckon.

Coupled with a push to the media - the recruitment drive featured in the top story on this evening's BBC South East Today news bulletin (watch it on iplayer here), as well as on the websites of a number of newspapers; it will be interesting to see what comes off the presses tomorrow morning... According to an article in The Daily Telegraph

adverts will be placed in newspapers along the Southern route

although the URL referenced, www.southernrailway.com/traindrivers does not appear to contain any content (yet!).

I've just tried to apply. Because I applied for another train drivers job and was unsuccessful, they wouldn't let me apply. Seems a bit harsh.

The question: Have you previously applied for a Drivers role in the past 6 months and been unsuccessful at any stage of the recruitment process?

I sent my application in for Virgin East Coast a few months ago, they were not going to go further my application so then that means I can't apply for anyone else?! Wow!

Are you sure they don't mean applied for a role within Southern?

I'm positive that applying for another TOC will not 'count' as "Have you previously applied for a Drivers role in the past 6 months and been unsuccessful at any stage of the recruitment process?"
As long as you have not actually failed the assessment twice or applied and failed with Southern in the last 6 months then I would apply and tick "no" "when asked the question.

If you answered "yes" to the question of being unsuccessful in any part of the recruitment process then you shouldn't have. I'm almost certain that means being unsuccessful with regards to the assessment center and not online application.

Thanks for this!

Any idea why there is a discrepancy in pay? On the advert it states circa 45k when qualified. ASLEF company information page states circa 50k?

Yes its because you get first years drivers money when you pass out.

Hi Guys

A bit of a dilema here, I applied for Southern Trainee Driver in August of last year and my application hasn't been looked at yet. I've been getting regular updates as to tell me they will get to my application in due course.... but seeing the position that came up yesterday has made me think whether they have overlooked my application, or do you guys think I should re apply to the new vacancy (if possible).

Many Thanks

Phone HR they will help you.

After writing the post, that's what I was thinking, that would be more reasonable. I think they were just a bit vague with the wording of the question, maybe should have put "have you applied for a drivers role within our company in the past 6 months and been unsuccessful?"

But anyways, cheers, il give it another go, see if they will let me back on

I'm inclined to agree with you. The 6 months before re-applying most definitely applies to the psychometric assessments that are uniform for all TOCs across the board. So for sure, if you've failed any part of the psychometric assessments, then it's definitely a 'yes'.

As for the initial paper/web application, I genuinely don't think that is what they're referring to with that question. Never mind the fact it can take ages to get a reply in the first place anyway, so if anyone's in that situation, by all means answer 'no'.

Just apply. Difference between previous ads and this one is this SJT questionnaire they've put up. Just a guess, but I think they'll probably disregard previous applicants as there was no SJT then (hence many applications which were hard to filter), and use this vancacy posting for potential candidates. If you want my opinion: put your application in.

There are 2 questions :Have you failed a Driver assessment (any part) within the last 6 months?

Have you previously applied for a Drivers role in the past 6 months and been unsuccessful at any stage of the recruitment process?

To me it is quite clear "at any stage"

The the only thing that isn't clear is whether it was with another company.

...and that's another can of worms: how do you define "another company". My previous rejection was from Thameslink, not Southern. However both are GTR brands. Same company? I wish they'd taken a little more care with the formulation of that question!

They are run as separate companies, maybe we shouldn't guess what they mean and apply !

I think it is quite simple....
If you have applied with the particular TOC in question (ie Southern, SWT, etc not a 'parent' group like GTR etc) and have failed ANY part of the recruitment process (this includes the initial sift after applying online) within the last 6 months then you CANNOT apply.

Here's a screengrab of the relevant questions:

nq2poo.png

Note the scope of the two questions:

Have you failed a Driver assessment (any part) within the last 6 months? No/Yes

Have you previously applied for a Drivers role in the past 6 months and been unsuccessful at any stage of the recruitment process? Yes/No

It seems to me that they are being pretty specific and sweeping in their "at any stage of the recruitment process" question and don't mean just the driver assessment - especially since this is the subject of the previous question...
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
I wonder if they're asking the question

Have you previously applied for a Drivers role in the past 6 months and been unsuccessful at any stage of the recruitment process?

because the SJT questions are the same across all the TOCs/brands within GTR, especially given that more than one of them is currently recruiting for trainee drivers, or has done so within the past six months. Hence applicants would have a "second chance" at passing the same SJT if they answered 'yes' and were allowed to proceed with the SJT (which is what happens on the GTR recruitment website).

All this is starting to drive me slightly stir-crazy now!
