Oyster gold card discount / PRIV?

Hi

I got the gate staff at Paddington LU to add my Z1-2 gold card to my Oyster - they accessed the special menu, and added PRIV All Rail to my card, putting in some of the digits from the gold card into the photocard number box.

Is this correct? Will I get the correct discount? I thought PRIV was something different.

thanks
Chris.

No, it is not correct. Gold Cards are treated like railcards and I believe the correct option is RAILCARD. PRIV will give you a much bigger discount, and will cause an interesting discussion if you are checked by an RPI who asks to see your PRIV entitlement.

I had the exact same experience other day at Liverpool Street: tried to get my gold card added to oyster, and the staff member tried putting it on as a PRIV until I told her that was incorrect

no-one seems to be able to do their job correctly these days, I would not have been happy if I had ended up fined

Clearly your one experience and the experience of the OP means that ''no-one'' in the rail industry can do their jobs properly.

Whilst this mistake could have had the potential to have got the passenger in trouble, and that is clearly not right, it is not fair to say that everyone is incapable of doing their jobs properly. There are a lot of very knowledgeable and diligent staff in the industry who would not have made that mistake.

nearly every single time went to renew my season ticket (or replace it due to fading) they messed it up.

in under 5 years I've been issued with childs tickets, tickets for the wrong route, tickets with the wrong destination, tickets with the wrong photocard number.

then the staff behind the ticket office get grumpy when I request they fix their mistakes issuing a £5000 ticket.

it took one staff member at Cambridge three attempts to correctly issue a simple gold card between Cambridge and London.

the one time I did a changeover (to Ryde) I got a phone call the next day demanding that I come in because they'd messed up the issue... I didn't bother.

to be fair at Liverpool Street it's always been better... maybe there's something about Cambridge station.

previously I dreaded the renewal process, thankfully now it can be done online and loaded onto a smartcard, other than the Oyster part, which they still mess up

Surely as the Priv entitlement can only be added by staff using the special menu and supposedly only when shown the relevan Priv entitlement card then the RPI should ask the innocent party to get off the train at the next manned station and have the incorrect entitlement removed and the correct Railcard discount added? No report for prosecution/ Penalty fare.?

Thanks, all. Will go to one of the remaining counters to try and put it right.

Is there any reason this couldn't be loaded on to the card when it picks up the season?

thanks again
Chris.

I was asked to show my Gold Card when I encountered a revenue check on the Underground. I was on a journey from Chancery Lane to South Kensington on a weekday mid-morning back in November. I was using Oyster PAYG with my 'Lichfield' Gold Card discount loaded.

The RPI scanned my Osyter and asked for my discount card. Flashed my Gold Card and he moved on.

I have at Barbican twice in last 12 minutes nths. Both times by plain clothes RPI, who presumably was checking the numeric code on the gates

For discounted tickets/seasons, they'll presumably look for the yellow light that also comes on for child tickets. No light and it must presumably be full fare, so not a problem.

Not for a railcard as yet but have to shown them my accompanying photocard for my partner oyster - I swear they are following me around now

Yes - when using TfL Staff Oyster, Bus Op Oyster and Priv/Railcard Oyster. Only once in a blue moon mind.

I have had my railcard checked at King's Cross on entering the gates with my Oyster loaded with a railcard, and onboard a bus.

On the bus, did it beep different to alert staff or did they just scan your card and ask?

When inspectors board the bus, they get a slip from the driver which shows how many of each type of pass has been validated on that trip. The inspector's hand held device will inform them of the type of pass they have been presented with. Drivers don't tend to get involved with the inspection of photocards, though the ticket machine does display what kind of pass has been validated.
