Chandler's Ford [CFR] to Fareham [FRM] - valid via SOU?

Can anyone advise if a single from Chandler's Ford to Fareham is valid via Southampton Central (SOU)?

The National Rail Enquries (NRE) site only suggests Eastleigh (ESL) to change - no surprise, though from Southampton Airport Parkway (SOA]) either route (via ESL or SOU) is possible.

The reason is simple that we need to go into Southampton (for a break of journey) and just trying to determine the best ticket(s) to buy

I'm 99% sure that Eastleigh to Fareham is not valid via Southampton, so CFR would not be either.

Are you travelling in the peak, and must it be a single?

Reason being that if off-peak, then a return is only a few pence more than a single, so you could buy something like CFR to Swanwick, which is valid either way. On the out journey you'd be breaking your route at Southampton, and you'd then start using your return portion at Swanwick, and break again at Fareham.

For a small amount extra you could buy a Romsey to Fareham ticket which im pretty sure is valid via Southampton Central.

The route options for an Eastleigh to Fareham ticket are irrelevant when considering whether a ticket from Chandlers Ford is valid via Southampton or not.

Routing is determined by the Routeing Guide, which tells us that Southampton Group is one of the Routeing Points for Chandlers Ford. Southampton Central passes the fares check rule for a ticket to Fareham so Southampton Group a valid Routeing Point.

So to answer the question - Yes,a ticket from CFR to FRM is valid via SOU.

In the end my friend decided, after CFR-SOU on the train, to get the bus onwards from southampton - in part as it also covered the journey from fareham to home (since they'd have needed a bus anyway). If only we had better inter-modal ticketing and journey planning

Interestingly the gates at southampton didn't swallow our outbound CFR-SOU tickets which they usually do - though possibly due to the weekend engineering works in the southwest area

However the info will be useful for next time.

I'm also planning to read up on the routeing guide & routing points in more detail so that I can try and get the answers myself next time.
