Favourite, even though parts of it no longer exist and there are no through trains over all the parts that do: the Midland route to Edinburgh -- St Pancras, Leicester, Leeds, Carlisle, Hawick, and Edinburgh.

Least favourite: The SER, the LC&D, and the LBSC main lines, and the LSW as far west as Basingstoke.

GWR from Paddington to Penzance is the best, how is this even up for discussion?

Least favourite, I guess HS1, since it was designed for speed and functionality, not for scenic value. Still quite fun getting up speed in east London though

Overall favourite has to be the WCML. It's so varied that it shows you almost all the types of landscape in England. I think when it weaves along besides the grand union canal in the south is great, and the best is approaching the edge of the lake district north of Lancaster - suddenly all these dramatic mountains start appearing. Tilt makes it more fun, if you're not prone to sea sickness :D and I don't think 390s are *that* bad personally. Compared to trains south of London they're still pretty nice.

Other mentions to the SWML, espescially after Southampton passing through the New Forest and beyond. The Kingston Loop and other suburban SWML services are good as they pass through the prettiest parts of London IMO - if you can count them as being part of the SWML, then it's the only London suburban route that is actually scenic. I like the Chatham main line too, don't know why.

Least favourite:
The BML is by far my least favourite to travel on because the service is so awful at the moment, and has been bad for many years. But the scenery of it is actually quite nice, although I might be biased because I grew up travelling on it a lot.
The SEML is absolutely boring, except for the tiny bit between Folkstone and Dover. 375s are decent but there's no variation in stock on the line, which makes it more boring.
GEML seemed very dull to me too, but I haven't been on it for a long long time so I can't remember very well. It doesn't seem to have been mentioned yet so I'll mention it.
And the ECML is dull for the main southern bulk of it all the way to York. Some large towns are passed through / stopped at, and those are nice enough, but the rest is flat farms - sprinkled with power stations and solar panels, which hardly make it any better. But it makes up for this if you stay on long enough to reach beyond York (which I've only ever done once sadly), and then it's pretty amazing. The trains are lovely too, HSTs are the best but IC225s are pretty good too IMO.

Overall least favourite for me has to be the SEML, it's just so dull.

In defence of the SEML, the section of the cut-off between Tonbridge and Orpington has some impressive hills and the straight section between Tonbridge and Ashford is very 'Garden of England' pretty.

How does the Chatham mainline compare in terms of scenery

Bearing in mind that the Midland runs as far north as Carlisle via Leicester, Sheffield, Wakefield Kirkgate, Leeds, Skipton, and Appleby, I would not really class that as a short mainline.

One of my favourites is the joint Great Western Railway/Great Central Railway Alternative Route via High Wycombe, as after emerging from the tunnels in North London, you pass through Middlesex and into open countryside.

In fact, as the Stourbridge Railway was my local line when I used to reside in the West Midlands, this line became part of the Great Western Railway, therefore as I've travelled along all of the main lines from London Paddington, I would go for all of them.

This includes the first mainline London - Bristol TM, Carmarthen/Milford Haven/Pembroke, Penzance, Banbury via Reading, and the route that ran to Birkenhead via Birmingham Snow Hill, Shrewsbury, Wrexham, and Chester. I have also covered the Midland Metro trams in 1999/2000 which uses most of the original GWR formation between Birmingham and Wolverhampton.

Not so much my least favourite, but a slight cooling off is the Caledonian Railway and Lancaster & Carlisle Railway heading to and from Glasgow. This can be attributed to that I only require 5 Class 390s now and once I have cleared the class, I may consider an attempt at my 5 remaining TP Class 350s.

The MML did not go through Wakefield.

Being based in Ashford for the earlier part of my life, I don't think I've used it enough to be able to comment. On the odd occasions that I have, novelty and heritage rolling stock might have positively influenced my opinions of it ! I vaguely recall pretty enough though.

As far as the Chatham network's concerned, I've always had a soft spot for the Maidstone/Ashford route, however some of the scenery here is spoilt by HS2 and the M20. Not too much fortunately though as this route meanders towards Otford.

Ok, mistake!

Though still for the dull part. Either you're crossing the flat landscape of the east or searing through the post-industrial shantytowns of West Yorkshire.

Shanty towns of West Yorkshire? Wakefield yes, but where else? Admittedly the route into Leeds doesn't show off its best areas, and you have to pass the UK's biggest shed (Elland Road football ground), but shanty towns is a bit strong, especially from a South Yorkshire dweller. :D

Favourites: WCML, MML, Chattom Main Lime, HS1..Least Favourites:

ECML for the boring factor plus expensive and unreliable IMO, HML as its too slow and in need of serious upgrading to make it fit for purpose again, Edinburgh Glasgow mainline, could be so much faster if a megaton more were invested but I think at present its holding things back.

ECML is brilliant for price and comfort (when on a GC HST). Alas, we have to enjoy it while we can :( Crappy modernity is knocking on the door.

Ok, maybe I was a tiny bit strong (Wakefield is just marginally better than Barnsley), but then I've just been up to Harrogate recently so give us a break!

(We can both agree that Harrogate is so much better than Barnsley+Wakefield put together anyway...)

I quite enjoy the WCML, it's certainly faster in sections than it used to be, after that I like the ECML and the Chiltern Mainline

Not quite impressed with the Midland Mainline

Has the Berks and Hants not got any supporters? i've only been over it once in daylight, one January morning many, many years ago on the Limited, but the section west of Newbury, by the canal, across the frosty fields, was very attractive. Not my favourite, but noteworthy - would thought someone would have it up there.

If you remember lines from when they had boxes every few miles, it makes a difference. Historically, pulling out of Sheffield Midland in the 1960s at about 01.30 on the St Pancras - Glasgow sleeper was something else - the blast furnaces by Brightside was a stunning experience - a mile of industrial fireworks, flames, orange glowing cupolas full of molten steel - all now cold and piped-music shopping centres ...

As for least favourite, well, York to the Tees river, even behind a Deltic, seemed a bit of a drag. So too Bristol Parkway to Swindon behind a Cl 47. But I never knew these lines when they had their mechanical boxes, and working men every mile or two - so I accept that my emotional attachment to these sections could never the same as someone who knew them in former days. I suppose it's all over that bit faster at 125 mph, but I've not had that experience.

The Berks and Hants is ok, but there's not much to look at, except for the Kennett and Avon Canal at Little Bedwyn

Admittedly a different part of the MML but on the rare occasion that I travel along the S & C in the dark I love seeing all the little farm houses / cottages all lit up as we head up the Long Drag. Of course they are mostly very isolated but in the event of disaster help would not be too far away. I always get off at Dent but I'm told that Mallerstang is just the same.

Not a fan Yorksrob?

Ahh, Yorkshire has so many wonderful places, I've never had the need to go to Harrogate.

That said, yes, better for a day out than Wakefield and Barnsley. .

Favourite: West Coast. Interesting near enough throughout, from the bustle of London, to the rolling Chilterns, to green, rural Northants, Warks and Cheshire, to the post industrial, Ruhrgebiet like North West conurbation, building up to the stunningly scenic Lune Gorge and Clyde via the "borderlands city of Carlisle", as I recall them once announcing proudly as I arrived, on to industrial Glasgow or historic Edinburgh.

Worst: East Coast. Grindingly tedious and flat throughout except very close to Edinburgh, and rough riding, cheaply built stock with awful seats.

Love the Midland. Mainly because of the architecture and history. It feels like its the last to be truly modernised; while St Pancras, Wellingborough, Kettering, Leicester, Nottingham and Sheffield stations are beautiful buildings. Plus it still has screaming HSTs. The West Coast has a lot of variations and I actually like the ECML, though only done half of it.

Least favourites: I find the Chiltern very boring. When using it, I just want the journey to hurry up and end. Same can be said for the Great Eastern Suffolk/Norfolk section, though I like the Essex/London part.

The ECML is only going to get more tedious in my humble opinion. A procession of Azumas. What a god awful name for a train. Probably sounds good in a Japanese accent. Once you get to Yorkshire it's A Zoomer.

Favourite: The TransPennine main line, for the mix of urban and rural scenery.
Least Favourite: The WCML for being a money-pit and for only actually running along the coast for a minute or so at Hest Bank.
