I thought Cross Country said they were going to use their HST's more intensively by using all 5 sets on a regular bases it would be nice as I've been on some of their services over the summer and they could sure do with more capacity.

That is the intention from December 17 timetable change.

Plan is to use 4 sets daily, with the fifth as a maintenance set. The diagrams also change significantly as 3 sets start at Newcastle and 1 at Leeds.

The services that need to be upgraded are the 10:02 Paignton-Manchester currently 4 car Voyager and the 7:25 Manchester-Newquay which use to be an HST but is now a solitary Super Voyager.

If you look at the consultation document you'll find out what their proposal for those services is going to be. But I suspect you'll disappointed as they're focusing a lot of resources on the NE-SW corridor.

The Paignton service you mention (the 1007 in their consultation list?) is not retained, so that problem goes away.

Newquay isn't in there.

I don't think the consultation covered Saturdays and Sundays - particularly summer weekends.

Fair point, but presumably the finite amount of rolling stock means that any extra Saturday service to Paignton must reduce the service somewhere else.

But that might not be a problem if you don't have a load of Bristol/Birmingham/Leeds commuters to shift on a weekend. I.e. a train that is doubled up in the week becomes a single set on the weekend, for example.

Was on the 1300 XC yesterday from Glasgow and i guy with a big backpacking rucksack who id seen before gets on . Noticed he had a XC jumper , still wearing a backpack he appears to be an onboard cleaner . He gets off at Motherwell , i thought it was a bit odd but maybe he gets on a Central bound XC at Motherwell . Anyone else seen him?

You might, I stress might, get away with that on Saturday but on Sunday XC is usually as busy as they are Monday - Friday occasionally busier!

Likely replaced by GWR. (Or possibly more likely, Nothing.)

It'll be replaced, replaced with the exisitng Exmouth to Paignton via Exeter stopper. This means that isn't no longer possible to have a day out in Torbay from Huddersfield.

I suspect the point being made was that the changes, including enhancements being made to Monday to Friday services, which could be appropriate to the Monday to Friday commuter/business travel market are not necessarily appropriate to Saturdays and Sundays, particularly in summer.

Unless the Metro service doubles in frequency, and probably gets significantly longer when it does run then it will struggle to meet the extra demand on all days of the week for around 3 months of the year. I would never suggest that the passenger loadings quoted in the consultation were mendacious b*****cks, but it's definitely possible that somebody miscounted quite badly.

There weren't any services from Huddersfield:o

There isn't, but its possible for one to have a day out in Torbay (from Huddersfield) before returning and changing at Man Picc in both directions.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
But more importantly, can someone from Torbay still enjoy a day out in Huddersfield?

Its possible but it also means that one would only have enough time to soley go round Huddersfield town centre and possibly a run down to Holmfirth but that's about it as you'd get 4 hours - which is a contrast of the 3 hours and 45 minutes that I had when I was in Torbay but this did mean a 5am start and a midnight finish.

Outbound:
Paignton - 0702
Torquay - 0708
Man Picc - 1159

~Change~

Man Picc - 1211
Huddersfield - 1246

So with 3 hours and 15 minutes, there's plenty of time to either leg it round the town or to pop down to Holmfirth (so that's 90 minutes gone already - 30 there, 30 to leg it round and 30 back). However, on the return it does mean that you get roughly half an hour in Temple Meads but having only eight minutes to change at Exeter St Davids.

Return:
Huddersfield - 1711
Man Picc - 1746

~Change~

Man Picc - 1805
Temple Meads - 2113

~Change~

Temple Meads - 2144
Exeter SD - 2241

~Change~

Exeter SD - 2249
Paignton - 2353

So its possible but it would mean planning it milatarily with some slack in the timings incase the return goes pearshaped.

Actually, you can have a further 20 mins in Huddersfield, coming back via Sheffield:
Huddersfield dep 17:31
Wakefield Westgate arr 18:09, dep 18:23
Exeter St Davids arr 22:41, dep 22:49
Paignton arr 23:53

..... if you really wanted to!

Absolutely, What would help is the path is taken up by GWR and run a fast Torbay to Exeter Service, would be a hit with commuters and locals alike, and providing a fast service to the XC services starting at Exeter save everyone cramming onto the XC services at Newton.

I don't doubt that Hinckley and Narborough warrant a half hourly service... Afterall they had it in the early/mid 2000's...

Oh yes, when the Coventry - Nottingham service use to run when it was Central Trains, in fact I believe someone posted a CT Timetable last year (dated from 2004) and the Birmingham/Coventry - Leicester services were included, Hinckley and Narborough certainly took a hit when the remodelling at Nuneaton was done and the Coventry - Nottingham service was finished.....

Edinburgh Evening News reports that through services to Aberdeen will not change. Since the sets concerned merely started later or finished earlier it will be interesting to see if the Aberdeen portion off the 06.00 BHM-GLC is dropped?

I expect Scotrail would love it if it wasnt as they could then quietly remove one of their services leaving XC to take up the slack and lets face it, the DMU fleat will still be stretched in December despite the 385s beginning to enter service as the refurbishment programme is running late and other opperaters, mainly Northern will be wanting the units they have been promised pritty soon.

IF the 06.00 BHM were to revert to a single set that might enable the set released to re-instate the Paignton extensions.

Commuters into Leeds won't be very happy...

XC shouldn't be a commuter operation, and having it drag an extra 5 coaches from Penzance to Manchester (or whatever) to carry Stockport-Picc commuters (or whatever) is an utter waste of money. Get the commuters off with some "u" and "s" stops, and provide proper commuter services for commuters.

(XC-lite Class 170 services excepted, but really in my view those need moving to LM, ATW or EMT as applicable)

The extra set for the 06:00 off BHM was being sourced from reducing the 07:03 off BHM from a pair of 220s to a single 221.

It'll be interesting to see whether they keep the 07:03 as a pair of 220s or strengthen the 06:00 to a 221+220 throughout, as both work back south through Leeds in the evening peak. The 07:03 on it's return departs Leeds at 16:11 and the 06:00 at 17:11. Either is an improvement over what had been planned for going south out of Leeds in the evening peak.
