I frequently use the Tyne and Wear Metro and I found out about the two battery locks they have a while ago. However, I have since noticed that they have pantographs, presumably tof work off the overhead lines. I am just wondering why thy have these if they are battery locks or why they are called battery locos if they run off the overhead lines?

Because the battery capacity probably isn't amazing.
This way they can use the overhead supply wherever and whenever it is available in transit to and from work or whenever.

Additionally it relieves the railway from having to provide a battery charging facility specific to them. Just stick them in a stock road with the pantograph up.

LUL battery locos have collector shoes too. Doesn't make them any less of a battery loco.....

As did the Motor Luggage Vans on the Southern.
It is the easiest way to charge them, and you can charge them in motion to and from the battery-powered section of their day's work.

Thanks for the information and answering my question. I suppose in a way its similar to how 3rd rail electrics can store electricity for traveling over complex point work where there is no 3rd rail.

Erm no. That's just called momentum. When there is not enough then the train stalls in a gap which then requires rescuing.

The Class 70 called and wants to remind you that booster sets are witchcraft.

Just as with your laptop or mobile phone will work off battery if you have mains power you will use that as much as practically possible. LULs or T+W metro battery locos or indeed the southern/BR MLVs will do the same.

Withcraft indeed. I know where a class 70 booster is sat. Must be worth a fortune in copper.
