Heathrow airport has announced a £10 reduction in domestic passenger charges, putting pressure on airlines to pass the saving onto their customers.
The reduction – would took effect from yesterday (January 1) – sees the airport’s domestic charge reduced to £19.10 per passenger.
Heathrow says it is the largest discount the airport has ever made, and that it “fulfils a key pledge Heathrow made in its expansion manifesto to make the UK’s hub airport work harder for families in every corner of Britain”.
The airport added that it “proposes that the discount lasts through to 2037, as long as it is in the public interest and there is a justification”....

Already, 40 more flights a week have been booked.

I thought they were short of capacity? If they can do this, do they really need a third runway?

So an extra 6 a day on top of the current ~1400? An increase in capacity (assuming the same size aircraft) of less than 0.5%.

Part of the planning permission for new runway was they had to provide more domestic links.

I may well be wrong, but I think these are a proportion of the slots vacated by Little Red (virgin), and there is a condition that these have to be domestic. Flybe have taken some, but this must be a move to try and fill the rest.

No doubt LHR can then say it has no spare slots, and a third runway is more pressing.

I bet Flybe will be pleased to hear this, reduces costs for them significantly.
