Glasgow rail protest planned as fares rise by up to 7 per cent

http://www.scotsman.com/news/transp...d-as-fares-rise-by-up-to-7-per-cent-1-4330956

ALASTAIR DALTON in The Scotsman said:
Rail union TSSA will launch a campaign for public control of the railways in Glasgow tomorrow as commuters returning to work face fare increases of up to 7 per cent.

TSSA general secretary Manuel Cortes said: “As the British Government moves rudderless towards triggering Article 50, the Tories must be made to end the scandalous situation which means Britain’s rail network is now nothing more than a gravy-train for Germany, France and Holland."
Return the means of production and transportation to patriots!

Odd way to pose the campaign. It's Scottish people who run it at the moment, Abellio didn't run a bus from Holland when they took over the franchise.

TSSA/Labour etc missing the mark completely. Again deliberately misunderstanding how it works up here. What TS says goes.

The 7% increase seemingly applies only to an Edinburgh-London ICEC single. ScotRail fares increased by less than 2%, so the TSSA aren't incorrect in who they've chosen to protest against.

Populist campaigns against fare increases don't tend to end up going very well. The result of Sadiq Khan's TfL fares freeze has been to considerably reduce the funding available for long-term improvements. All the hard-pressed commuters are complaining about paying so much for overcrowded, late and cancelled services, yet the effect of freezing those fares is to make it less likely that the services will get any better!

If people want to campaign for something that will actually make public transport better and more affordable then they should be looking at Land Value Taxation. No property magnate has ever decided to charge for the use of the lift in their buildings because it makes them less money, as they fully capture the value of public realm improvements within their building through the rent they charge to tenants. With an LVT, this can happen for the government across the entire country, and so there is a very serious and very plausible case to be made to subsidise public transport fares using the LVT receipts. It shifts the burden of paying for public transport onto the people who actually gain the most from its existence, rather than those who actually use it.

I wonder why the driver accepted the route? Most trains stop at Haymarket so I wouldn't have thought they would be going too fast to stop.

I read something somewhere about this, cant remember where but, about the driver couldn't see the electric trains stop here sign because it was to the off-side.

dont know if thats the case or not however.

The only significant thing about this story is that, other than the usual unhinged comments at its foot, noone has attempted to politicise it. [emoji38]

I've been sent wrong road at Haymarket once, a Glasgow shuttle put onto the Fife line in the morning peak about ten years ago. We had to reverse out of that one across three lines and we spent about half an hour over the task - that will have been a bit more costly I suspect. Maybe The Scotsman would like to drag that one up, it's not a lot older than a lot of the news they print.

The train was sitting in platform 0, and was signalled into the depot. Presumably, the signaller didn't know the train was electric, and the driver thought he was going out to the main line.

The driver should have recognised the route and realised that he was being signalled onto an unelectrified line. Surely that is something that would be covered during any route learning processes.

Why was a 380 over in Platform 0 anyway?

Was it part of the training that has resulted in some or the 380s being taken off the Inverclyde routes?

I hope not or that will be the next headline from our travel correspondent at The Scotsman

380s are not confined to Inverclyde. They work the North Berwick services and work between Glasgow/Ayr and Edinburgh on some services via Carstairs in order to do this. There is an evening empty move from Edinburgh to Haymarket off a North Berwick service

I see the Editor of the Scotsman is leaving 3 weeks before its bicentenary. I can't see it surviving that long now. Unfortunately its constant desire to find fault and conservative views on almost everything are out of touch with the public. You make your bed....

Yes I'm fully aware of what routes they work, it was one making it's way into P0 that puzzled me as it's not a natural stopping off point for any 380 service and as they are currently using them for driver training (using units taken from inverclyde) that was why I asked the question.

Can't say I'd miss it if it were to go away. The Edinburgh Evening News which the also publish has to one of the worst (and most expensive) local papers I have ever come across.

Apparantly a few days a class 320 was at platform 12 awaiting a service to Gourock . The train got cancelled as they no drivers can take the 320s to Gourock . I got this from a reliable source who boarded the train at central .

it happened. Was Saturday early evening. Drivers that sign Gourock also sign 320s so it must be a Route Clearance issue that didn't allow it to run. Gourock and Bays are timed for 314s which accelerate much quicker than 318/320 so even if a 320 were to work one it would be late due to their poor acceleration.
