What class of Diesel do you think will be the next to become part of the national collection obviously allocated to those classes which have a special place in the history of the British Railway Network.

Phoenix,

I think both the class 50 and class 56 should be installed to the national collection. They have both played an important and significant role in British railway history and deserve such recognition.

A Class 58 (58050) has already been designated for the National Collection by the RHC. Also designated are 73201 and 91131.

IIRC a class 50 (50033) was part of the National Collection but got removed from it a few years ago. Not sure why though.

I think:56,57 (to put alongside a 47....),59,60 and in 20 or 30 years time a 66,there should be at least one preserved,big part in British rail history,killed off all the good stuff!<(

Being a National Collection, I personally feel there should be at least one of each class of loco preserved- though sadly, some classes are over-represented, whereas some pioneering classes are extinct. It is however, good that each class of AC electrics have been preserved, though only two, one of which was the least successful class of 1st gen AC electrics are in the National Collection.

Can't see a justification for a 56 - it was a 47 bodyshell with more powerful engine.

58050 definately should be - last mainline diesel built by BR.

59001 also makes a pretty good case for itself as well.

I think a Pacer should probably be there as an example of production lightweight railbus, also a class 150 Sprinter - as an example of the first of the second generation DMUs.

Beyond that it's difficult to see what should be considered.

Extending it to electrics - a Cl 90 or 91. One of the 'PEP' based EMUs - probably a 313 would be best due to it's dual-voltage nature. And whichever the last BR built EMU was - 321 / 322 ?

We have the London Transport Mueseum thankfully for that sort of stuff.
If you have ever been to there Depot/warehouse at Acton you will see they do a Damn fine job.

Seen bits of ot on tv but never ben in person. Maybe it would be a good idea to have one on display in some form at the NRM as it would give people up north an oppurtunity to see one. I know the Island Line use ex-tube stock on their routes due to a low tunnel or something.

To the contrary the national collection would lose its 'exclusive' appeal if you started adding DMU's, EMU's, tubestock, shunters etc so probably a bad idea.

Well there are various days which the Warehouse is open to the public and also TFL/LTM do at least on heritage day where they will pull out an old piece of stock for the day.

I think that a 142 should be next as they have been a major part of the DMU fleet
Possibly a 442 or a 508 as the next EMU?

Sorry for the dig, but maybe a 59 would be next, as they were the start of the "GM-EMD" revolution in freight locos.

Do all NRM stock have to be fully "roadworthy"?

Whilst this thread relates to Diesels, I'm wondering if the Grayrigg Pendolino should be transferred to the National Railway Museum. Given that it is unlikely to be used again due to the potential damage to the structural integrity of the unit, shouldn't the leading vehicles be found a home within the collection instead of languishing in MOD sidings.

I think nowadays Shed hate has vanished I mean I like them just well they are the bog standard to me and I wont go outta my way to see one.
But I don't think people hate them these days.
