The north west of Scotland is expected to be worst hit, with gusts of 90mph+ expected. Other areas can expect 50-70mph.

ScotRail have already pre-emptively cancelled services on several routes: West Highland, Far North, Kyle, Fife Circle, Edinburgh-Perth, Stranraer-Kilmarnock, Glasgow-Carlisle/Newcastle and Highland Main Line.

Presumably some of those are because of expected increased journey times causing havoc on single line sections, rather than potential obstructions?

Dawlish is a long way from Scotland where storm Barbara is predominately hitting. In any case, the winds are from the south west and to affect Dawlish they have to be from an easterly direction.

Surprising if that's the case as the worst of the waves appear to be up north from looking at the charts.

There's also storm Conar not to far behind Barbara, I would expect that XC are keeping an eye on the tracks of both storms

I'd be as much concerned by the risk of disruption through flooding as wind damage given the rain that's coming down around Perth at the moment.

I was speaking with the guard on one of the Ayr - Girvan short workings on Monday night where I mentioned that this year hasn't been as bad as last in terms of storms, i.e. this time last year it was onto Storm E.

It is quite windy down in the South at the moment but nothing as bad as in Scotland

Hopefully Barbara Windsor won't cause too much damage

The horizontal rain in Batley about an hour ago persuaded me to get a cab to Dewsbury station rather than facing the walk down Bradford Road, though that may be a completely separate weather system for all I know. Huddersfield is dry for now but quite blowy. Most services between Leeds and Manchester delayed by 10+ minutes.

In this part of Cheshire East, there has not been wind speeds that the weather forecasters said would affect this area this afternoon and the rain all came at once in a short-lived torrential rainstorm in the mid-afternoon.

Southern were warning of high winds. Not sure if they have been affected. There was some high winds in South West London earlier but it's quietened down a little now.

Of course Southern have their own storm. Storm Southern. It's been raging for months and looks set to carry on. It's a very slow moving front.

High winds are expected between 16:00 and 20:00 today, Friday 23rd December.

Working with Network Rail we have reviewed the likely impact of #StormBarbara on Southern, Gatwick Express and Thameslink and additional preparations are being made by Network Rail.

Of course Southern have their own storm. Storm Southern. It's been raging for months and looks set to carry on. It's a very slow moving front.

Possibly an occluded front developing: that's where a cold front (let's give it a name at random, say, like Front Grayling, than which there is none colder) comes along quickly and forces the warm front aloft
