I think it's possible to read too much into class number announcements in the media. "800s" can just as easily be used as shorthand for any IEP rather than as a matter of exact detail. (Rightly or wrongly)

It's like people referring to SWT's new units as "700 variants" when they really mean "Desiro City variants"...

I thought I had read somewhere that the !80,s was heading to Grand Central to replace there HST sets from Sunderland and that would make them an operator of one class of trains only as against two at present.

We will all just have to wait till nearer the date of when the new units are due to appear and see if they go to Grand Central then.

That's the GWR HSTs, not the HT ones.

EDIT: Oops meant 180s not HSTs.

Hull Trains are getting 802's along with Transpennine Express. That would mean that the entire of First operated TOC's would operate IEP's of some sort.

At a guess, the 180's would be scrapped. They are seemingly unreliable, and I can't see any other TOC wanting them in the UK, as nearly all of the UK based TOC's will have more modern stock by that time. Maybe they will find a home abroad... who knows?

More likely they'd go to whoever has the class 175s at the time with the two classes being from the same manufacturer

Really? I highly highly doubt that a fleet of 4 High Speed DMUs will be finding their way to the scrapyard already. Nor would I or OOC stilll dub them as seemingly unreliable, not least if GC are still after a fleet of them!

Even if they end up a little rogue, just like the "Northern" trio from a few years ago, they will find a use somewhere with someone.

GC apparently have an option. And I don't think the 180 units are that unreliable, not the Hull ones anyway. They do have their moments though!

Did you put the kiss of death on Hull Trains 180,s then as see today ( Saturday 17th December ) they have one failed set, just 6 days since the last failure.

They had a good run for a while before that. I often wonder what the problem is and if its a classic case of computer says I don,t want to go back and forth to London today I am having a rest day.

Given the widely expected "vapourware" status of the Alliance 'baby Pendolinos' for the WCML that never get ordered they'll probably end up on Blackpool open access, after a last ditch attempt by Alliance to defer their start date...

What complete guff.

20-year-old class 373s are being scrapped (having done little during their working lives).
Class 90/92s are mouldering away at Crewe (ditto). Class 67s are going the same way.
If nobody wants the 180s they will go.
I think it all depends on what happens to the 175 fleet, and Alstom's interest in keeping them going, versus buying new.

If the class 373 sets averaged one return trip daily for five days a week that's well over 3 million miles each. And most diagrams cover at least two return trips daily...

More guff. Why you are comparing a 125mph DMU to electric locomotives is a mystery to me.

Since when are 67s 'mouldering' away?

And the reasons for 20-year old 373s being scrapped is nothing to do with them simply being 20 year EMUs.

Absolutely. It seems we become preoccupied with the age of a piece of machinery, rather than the ongoing cost to maintain it and keep it running.

The economies of switching to the Valero must, over their lifetime, be overwhelming.

I highly doubt they would be scrapped. As far as i know the 180's from Hull Trains and GWR will end up with Grand Central as a single fleet

So could you point us in the direction of a major secondhand market for 200mph-capable high-speed trains?

Please don't say UK domestic services. Only seven were built for North of London operations and have you forgotten all the palaver involved in operating five of them in GNER service from 2000-2005?

The Swiss scrapped four 125mph ETR470 Pendolinos last year that were built in 1993, so of similar vintage to the 373s. Sometimes old trains do die...

The traffic those 90s, 92s and 67s were built for isn't there any more - or did you miss the loss of fast mail and parcels traffic and the lack of Channel tunnel freight? Class 67s were dropped like hot bricks by passenger operators once something cheaper to operate came on the market - though Caledonian Sleeper may be regretting not signing up for some Class 68s now.

Whereas dmus of pretty much any type are in demand and likely remain so for quite some time, so the odds of the Hull Trains sets (or any 175s for that matter) going anywhere near a cutter's torch soon are pretty slim - never mind that the 180s will still be in service with HT until well into 2019, so there's no rush to find them a new home.

The difference being that the GWR transfer to GC is a published fact and the HT transfer to GC is a rail forum assumption that makes things nice and neat...
