Trivia: geographically anomalous station names

I'm surprised at the number of "Broadway" posts.

"Broadway" is a very traditional name for a road, that was wider than a normal road, hence a Broad Way, a name also used to name said famed street in New York, New York.

Hence why, Mill Hill, Ealing etc have Broad Ways, as opposed to the many Narrow Ways.

There are so many places with silly names, I mean, there's no beach anywhere near Waterbeach, Edgware Road is on Chapel Street and Royal Oak is no-where near any Royal Oak (the pub it was named after moved to the corner of Porchester Road and Westbourne Grove and has long since been name the Porchester).

Loughborough Junction is neither in Loughborough nor has it ever been the junction for trains to there. Then there's Clapham Junction, of course....

Wapping is a misnomer too - very narrow platforms.

Whitley Bridge, a parly station outside Knottingley (one train roughly every 12 hours in each direction), is in neighbouring Eggborough.

A well known one is the odd arrrangement of the Dulwich stations.

Catford and Catford Bridge are right next to each other, so the separate naming is debatable.

Someone mentioned Clock House too - that one can't even decide how it's spelt, referred to as Clockhouse sometimes.

Ben Rhydding. Who is he?

Ben is Gaelic for hill/mountain e.g. Ben Nevis, Ben Lomond. Whether or not Ilkley Moor was ever known as Ben Rhydding isn't known, but the railway company fell for the tale.

"ea" (or "y" in Ely) is an old ending meaning "island" and indicated a piece of land that was mororless dry in the days when the Fens were marshes, hence an obvious place for settlement. Parts of Manea and Whittlesea for example above the 5m contour on the OS 25000 map (the surrounding land being below sea level), but there is nothing big enough at Shippea Hill to merit a contour. There may be a rise of less than five metres, or as suggested above the fact the name dates from much later may mean no connection to any change in elevation.

As I've posted elsewhere "Shippea Hill" is a hill surrounded by the 0m contour, with the "Shippea Hill Farm" at the top of the hill within a small area above 5m. It is 2.5km west of the station, north of the line, but is quite noticeable if you know where to look.

Kiveton Bridge station is in a village called Kiveton Park, while Kiveton Park station is in a village called Kiveton Park Station.

In a similar vein, Widdrington station is in Widdrington Station. Widdrington is about a mile away.


Hertford East is in the town centre. Hertford North is almost due west of it, and is not in the town centre. Central and West might have been better names.


Is Long Eaton station actually in Sawley? It was called Sawley Junction until the station genuinely in Long Eaton closed in 1967.

Clock House, Kent House, Birkbeck and Beckenham Hill all seem to be named after roads, whilst Ravensbourne is either named after the road or river. You probably wouldn't know unless you know the Beckenham area.
