London Overground departure board changes

Every 15 minutes is hardly rapid metro. From my understanding a rapid metro or rapid transit is every 2-3 minutes i.e. the Victoria Line, not every 15 minutes. Thats basically just a suburban rail service using the word "metro".

I take your point there. But having a train every 20 mins to Watford Jun or every 30 like the London Bridge - London Victoria, people want to know the times. They don't just turn up hoping they don't have to wait 29 minutes.

I may be mistaken here but from previous journey's I seem to remember the screens at the stations where the Bakerloo runs with the Watford trains, the screens did still show the departure times of Overground trains?

So at Willesden Junction for example you'd get:

1 Harrow & Wealdstone 4 mins
2 10:23 Watford Junction 7 mins
3 Stonebridge Park 14 mins


I may be mistaken though. Surely that could be adopted on the ELL where the stations are also served by Southern?

The Prague underground metro is streets ahead, it has a minutes AND seconds display for the next train!

TFL seem to be trying to make everything as difficult as possible. So they are getting rid of paper timetables and now getting rid of departure board times. They seem to want to run London Overground just like London Underground and forget that it is actually a National Rail service. As you say i dont think this will really work especially on the lines that have a much less frequent service. People need to know the actual times of their trains.

Most people know the times of their trains though so I am unsure as to why you are so against this? They (generally) run to a frequency so if you just miss one you don't really have to wait long for another and no paper timetable now a display showing the time of the departure is ever going to change that.

Here is an overseas experience.

In Sydney the PIS shows in large numbers the minutes to departure. This varies if there is any disruption to running. The last 1 minute extinguishes 1 minute before departure. Doors can be closed from 30 seconds before departure. Somewhere on the screen is the scheduled departure time but nobody bothers reading it or looking for it. At the top of the screen is a digital clock showing minutes and seconds. I have yet to hear any passenger complaints. It is after all, how long to departure that passengers really want to know.
The concourse indicators show both the departure time and minutes to departure. It is a very user friendly arrangement.

A similar display arrangement exists in Melbourne.

Why do I get the feeling that someone moved from TfL to a TOC and used this idea to justify their job?

I'm not too bothered about the format as long as the information is accurate. Unlike at Camden Road where, on more that one occasion, I've seen the displays showing trains apparently moving backwards or counting down to zero and simply disappearing.

Edit: Oh and on one occasion the first train in 8 minutes and the second in 4.

Melbourne has the scheduled departure time and minutes to departure very much equal.
In general the scheduled departure time, where it's going and how far away it is are all one line with underneath showing the stopping info two different formats depending on what type of PID(LED or LCD) it is.

The board on platform 18 was showing a Greater Anglia service to Southend Victoria departing quite some way in advance; I'm guessing this unit is some kind of hot spare there all day or it comes in really early from the depot.

Surely using option 2 would satisfy everyone? I mainly use the times to calculate how close a connecting service might be at a connecting station - so how long between getting off one train and boarding another.
