Could someone please tell me the route Transpenine Express take from Wigan North Western to Manchester Piccadilly/Airport.

It is possible for 185,s to go via Atherton or Westhoughton ,which they retain for route knowledge, when there are engineering works. Likely to be quite a lot in 2017 !:)

IIRC when TPE started running via Chat Moss to reach the WCML(N) they stopped using the Atherton line for diversions and that the route knowledge has therefore now lapsed.

Correct. Westhoughton has been kept as a diversion.
