On the UK rail network ther is clearly a lot of potential confusion. I do wonder if a standardised naming convention would help. For example recently I have done a lot of travelling in the tri-city area of Poland. (Gdansk-Sopot-Gdynia). There they appear to have a system that removes concussion. Simply, City-Area. So for example rathe than having a station in called Moorfields which you have to know is in Liverpool, it would be called, Liverpool-Moorfields. Similar with Freshfields in Formby it would be Formby-Freshfields. At least then if there was confussion, you would not be too far away from where you want to be.
Just to add, the major station in each city is denoted as such. So Gdynia Glowna is the main station as is Gdansk Glowna.
In the UK we seem to do this in some places but less so in others. For example out of parkway and Temple meads who would know without prior knowledge who h is the main Bristol station. In Liverpool, a guess at the English would tell you central is the mainline station, but you would be wrong, and Manchester whilst the major stations may be prefixed at a guess would anyone know where to go to catch a train to ...
