Can you think of bus routes/services that are no longer running?

To start this off I will list some from various parts of the country.

West Yorkshire first...

X32 Sheffield-Leeds
X33 Sheffield-Bradford
655/755 Leeds-Yeadon-Bradford

Nottingham

12 Beeston-City-Wilford Hill
51 City-Arnold-Bulwell
90 Arnold-City-Edwalton
X2 Nottingham-Meadowhall
X61 Nottingham-Oxford
757 Leicester-Nottingham-Doncaster

North West/North Wales...

215 Burnley-Skipton
727 Barnoldswick-Liverpool (Ribble Timesaver route)
X1 Chester-Caernarfon
X8 Banks (Southport)-Liverpool-Chester-Llandudno
X61 Blackpool-Manchester

There will be countless more, but some of these above were ridiculously long distance services.

You can still do the full 727 Liverpool-Skipton today, it's the Stagecoach X2 Liverpool-Preston, then Preston Bus 280/X80 Preston-Skipton i done these routes in full only a couple of weeks ago.

215 Burnley-Skipton has been replaced by the X43 Witchway Manchester-Burnley-Skipton although the X43 uses the M65 between Burnley & Colne.

Many of the GM Buses Express routes & other Manchester routes
34 Liverpool-Manchester need to change buses & bus companies at Leigh, even then it only goes to St Helens.
9 Manchester-Bolton-Blackrod.
90 Manchester-Bury-Rawtenstall
400/401 Bolton-Oldham-Stockport, 401 was originally Wigan-Oldham
X1/201 Manchester-Macclesfield-Ashbourne-Derby

A few entries for Bristol.

2 (Stockwood to Cribbs Causeway) was renumbered from 54 in September 2013

The 3 and the 4 (City Centre to Cribbs Causeway) were renumbered from 41 and 40 in September 2015

The old 4 (Centre to Downend) was withdrawn on 18th April 2013.

The 8/9 (Temple Meads to Clifton/Redland) have changed in September just gone. All services in Clifton are now solely the 8 in
both directions. The 9 only runs half hourly and serves Redland only.

X18 (Aztec West to Southmead Hospital) was withdrawn this year due to low usage.

The 19 is the new 319, renumbered earlier this year.

21 (Felton to Temple Meads) was tendered by NSC but due to low usage was withdrawn on 23rd August 2015.

25 withdrawn a few years ago, now just 24 (Ashton Vale to Southmead Hospital).

42 (Centre to Bitton) journeys between Bitton and Keynsham withdrawn last year.

43 (Centre to Cadbury Heath) was cut back to Bitton only via Warmley but now runs back Cadbury Heath.

44 (Centre to Kingswood) now runs to Cadbury Heath via Hanham Common

45 (Centre to Longwell Green) now runs only to Cadbury Heath also.

51 (Centre to Hengrove) (surprisingly) withdrawn in September, all journeys now the 50. 51 taken over by Wessex.

71 (Temple Meads to UWE) diverted to serve UWE Bower Ashton instead this year.

74 (Centre to Cribbs Causeway) withdrawn and replaced partly by re-routed 73 and X74.

78/79 (Bristol to Thornbury) renumbered from 309/310 two years ago.

81 (Longwell Green to Yate) withdrawn this year, replaced in part by 16 (Hanham to Bristol Parkway Station) instead.

83 (Kingswood to Thornbury) withdrawn last year, replaced in part by 81 and 77.

121 (Bristol to Weston-super-Mare) withdrawn two years ago.

327 (Bristol to Yate), now the X49.

332 (Bristol to Bath), now the 37.

354 (Bristol to Nailsea), now the X8/X9.

357 (Bristol to Portishead), now the X3/X4.

361 (Bristol to Clevedon), now the X6.

379 (Bristol to Bath via Midsomer Norton) service withdrawn this year.

520 (Centre to Westbury) withdrawn last year, replaced in part by the 77.

W1 (Bristol to Weston-super-Mare) now the X1A.

X2 (Bristol to Portishead) now the X4

X5 (UWE to Weston-super-Mare) now only Bristol Parkway to Weston-super-Mare. Route axed from UWE.

X7 (Bristol to Newport via Chepstow), now branded Severn Express.

X10 (Bristol to Nailsea) withdrawn last year.

X74 (Centre to Bradley Stoke) withdrawn in September, Centre to UWE Express replaced by UWE service.

In South Manchester/North Cheshire, most of the former NWRCC routes radiating from Manchester City Centre have ceased, the only survivors being the 130 to Macclesfield (formerly 29) and 157 to Woodford (formerly 31). The outer ends of some of the other routes survive, e.g. 236 (formerly 6) from Ashton to Glossop, 358 (formerly 28) and 199 (formerly 27) beyond Stockport, but others (e.g. 20 and 32 serving Poynton and 125 via Hyde to Glossop) have completely disappeared.

Certain key former tram routes in inner Manchester have also lost nearly all of their bus services, e.g. Upper Lloyd Street and Slade Lane, but other roads nearby still have a frequent service, e.g. Wilmslow Road and Birchfields Road.

90 Manchester-Bury-Rawtenstall
400/401 Bolton-Oldham-Stockport, 401 was originally Wigan-Oldham
X1/201 Manchester-Macclesfield-Ashbourne-Derby

The 727 ran via Colne though whereas the 280/X80 runs via Clitheroe. I was never sure of the 727 route, I just know it ran past the road I lived on in Colne.

90 Rawtenstall-Manchester - Yeah I remember this as a kid. Seeing these in Rawtenstall in their GM Buses livery always reminded us of being near Greater Manchester. My friends and I would travel on the 743 (now X43) from Colne. I recall the 34's from Manchester-Liverpool too.

As you also said, X1/201 from Manchester-Derby. I remember Stagecoach Manchester running this at one point, but didn't Derby City Transport also run it for a time?

I might be going mad here but I seem to recall a short lived Bakewell-Leicester service in either the late 90's or early 2000's?

Other services I remember was an X== from Lancaster-Preston-Southport that used to link in Preston with the X61's. I know that journey is still possible in a way with a change in Preston, but I seem to remember it running via the M6 between Galgate and Fulwood.

Services that are no longer, even if the routes are still possible;

12 Nottingham-Leicester via the villages
273 Burnley-Bolton
502 Keighley-Halifax-Huddersfield
653 (?) Bradford-Otley-Harrogate

Also, there used to be the 571/2 buses from Bradford to little villages near Sowerby Bridge (Boulderclough rings a bell).

47 - Warrington to Lower Peover/Holmes Chapel/Northwich via Knutsford
49 - Holmes Chapel to Northwich (Market days only)
110 - Wilmslow to Handforth
E69 - Holmes Chapel/Alderley Edge to Altrincham (Saturday only)
H50 - Sandbach to Altrincham (Market days only)
X1 - Chester to Altrincham (Sundays and Bank Holidays)
X20 - Middlewich to Cheshire Oaks (???? only)
X22 - Winsford to Liverpool (Saturdays only)
X81 - Winsford to Hanley (???? only)

Various Rural Rider 'RR' routes. The one to survive the longest was RR3 Macclesfield to Disley.

I'd think this is almost impossible to define especially when you include renumberings etc. Working on that basis, almost every service in Teesside, Northumberland and most of Co Durham has been lost!

If it's just a renumbering or a renumbering with a minimal route revision then I wouldn't call it a bus route that is no longer. For instance the old 288 Knutsford-Mobberley-Wilmslow-Morley Green-Hale Barnes-Altrincham no longer exists but an 88 Knutsford-Mobberley-Wilmslow station-Wilmslow-Morley Green-Hale Barnes-Altrincham exists. Re-routing it to serve Wilmslow station and dropping a digit off the number isn't the same as a lost bus route.

However, I mentioned 27 twice despite there still being Knutsford to Macclesfield buses using the 27 number. This is because there are no longer any weekday services which are extended beyond Macclesfield to Congleton/Biddulph and I don't think you can even get a bus from Macclesfield to Biddulph anymore. Also the Sunday and Bank Holiday service was withdrawn altogether and those were the only bus services that actually went in to Tatton Park, so the withdrawal of those services cut Tatton Park off the bus network.

I have the timetable for the 727 which i'll have a look at after.

X1/201 i don't remember Derby City Transport, but First Manchester ran it near the end

761/762 Liverpool-Preston-Blackpool plus Sunday Lancashire contract 754/758 which saw Blackpool Transport buses in service, in Liverpool.

I remember the X67 going Liverpool-Chesterfield for a short spell late 80s.

What was the service that ran from Manchester-Chester? I think Arriva ran it and it was quite often a minibus. X3 rings a bell?

I do remember the X67 from Manchester-Mansfield, but I don't remember it going to Lincoln, although I know it did (if that makes sense). I think before it ended they cut it back to Chesterfield.

Another service lost was the First PMT service that ran from Hanley-Sheffield, although I can't remember the number. Speaking of Sheffield, I remember the 284 (I think) that ran from there to Bawtry.

Back to Lancashire, I believe it is nigh on impossible to get a direct bus during the day from Rawtenstall to Ramsbottom. Bearing in mind that at point you had the 90 and 273. I also recall the 743 from Colne at one short lived point linking the two.

The 747 from Leicester to Uppingham is soon to be no more due to Centrebus cuts.

Trent Barton have withdrawn a number of services in recent years, including Ruddington Connection, Leicester Xprss, Long Eaton Xprss, Sawley Xprss, Commuter Xprss (there's a theme here!) and their 22 service.

Of course, where a bus company has stopped trading, their services often cease; Premiere Travel ran the My17, Red1, Red2, Red3, Red4, Red5, Red7, Red8, Red9 and Red Flyer along with myriad tendered services. Dunn Line and then Veolia operated the D2000 (Stapleford to Beeston) and again many others - T1 from Ilkeston to Ikea.

Nottingham City Transport used to run Skylink Nottingham (technically the route name still exists but via a totally different route) and the 13 and 14.

Yourbus in recent years have operated and then withdrawn the Y4, Y28, Y29 and the Citylink.

Multiple routes linking Huddersfield with Barnsley, Meadowhall and Sheffield all gone.
365 Bradford to Oldham is no more, though the journey is still possible using the X63/363 to Huddersfield and changing onto the 184 to Manchester.
X6 no longer serves Huddersfield.
503 was once Huddersfield - Halifax - Bradford but is now Huddersfield to Halifax only.

Leicester Xpress was never going to last. National Express have a healthy patronage on that corridor.

I didn't know the 22 had gone but it explains why I couldn't find it on the TB website last time I was down (3 weeks ago).

As you clearly live in TB Land, do you remember them running a bus from Bakewell-Derby-Leicester?

502 Keighley-Halifax-Huddersfield
(there's a very limited service on the middle section between Denholme and Halifax)
653 (?) Bradford-Otley-Harrogate
(the 653 has been recently revived by TLC and runs either Bradford-Menston-Otley or Bradford-Otley-Pool, not e/Su, plus the 747 Bradford-Pool-Harrogate daily)

Also, there used to be the 571/2 buses from Bradford to little villages near Sowerby Bridge (Boulderclough rings a bell).
(the 576 extended through Sowerby Bridge as three separate routes. 576/577/578 serving the various hamlets, I think the present service is just one minibus route covering all the hamlets)

The old 365 ran from Bradford to Huddersfield along the same route as the 363 (sticking to the main road but serving all stops), then West of Huddersfield it stuck to the A62 but diverted into Marsden village centre before climbing over Standedge. Beyond there it ran pretty much the same as the present day 184. The route was split at Huddersfield in the 1990s but the 365 number was still used for a Huddersfield to Oldham service for a good few years.

61A - Huddersfield to Buxton, service was withdrawn on the 16th April '08. Service has since been replaced with the 951 Huddersfield to Glossop and High Peak / Bowers running the 61 between Glossop and Buxton as per the Saturday timetable.

76 - Petworth to Horsham, now replaced with a peak hour 75.

406 - Leeds to Selby via the 402 route then via Brayton into Selby.

Flamborough Sunday bus services, various numbers.

842 - Malton to Castle Howard, replaced with the 181.

357 - Goole to Scunthorpe, service withdrawn replaced with the 360 / 361 - one went via Crowle, the other via Amcotts.

---

The 8/9 in Bristol was split as there were more people using the 8 (Clifton) than the 9 (Redland). Speaking of which there was a 266 around the Westbury (Wilts) area earlier this year.

In the 80's and probably into the 90's it was possible to get a bus from Bradford to Skipton/Stanbury/Oxenhope on what was the 662/3/4/5 routes. Now it's the 662 from Bradford to Keighley, where you have to change for the above places.

Can anyone up here remember the routes?

I seem to remember the 662 going to Skipton and the 664 going to Stanbury but I could be wrong.

Originally the 67 ran Bradford - Keighley with some journeys running through to Skipton, with a service 12 running Silsden-Haworth.
Renumbering and rerouting saw 663 664 665 as Bradford-Keighley-Haworth then on to Oxenhope, Stanbury and Oakworth, plus 666 668 as Bradford-Sutton-Skipton.
662 was later used for short workings only.

Renumbering? The old Teesside routes didn't have numbers but letters. All are lost now.

The 22 went when they did their review of services in the Rushcliffe area; the Rushcliffe Villager now covers much of the route. I don't remember a Bakewell - Derby - Leicester bus although that does remind me of the "Red Arrow On Tour" they ran one summer from Nottingham to Bakewell via Derby, Ripley, Wessington and Matlock.

My 1941 timetable shows the 67 every 10 minutes Bradford - Keighley with 1 an hour extending to Skipton. In the 80s the 662-8 ran every 10 minutes as you say. The 663 has now been combined with the previously infrequent 500 Keighley - Hebden Bridge (- Todmorden) into a new 500 Keighley - Hebden Bridge. The 666, 667 and 668 turned into a half-hourly 66 and an hourly 78A (which has now become an every 2 hours service Skipton - Airedale Hospital and replaced between Airedale Hospital and Keighley by a second 25 each hour (now an M4)).

I remember all the 66x services used to wait 10 minutes at Keighley - if you were lucky and quick you could miss a bus, get the one behind and change at Keighley onto the one you wanted.

Transdev are inviting comments on combining the 66 with the K7 (formerly 717) service to Oakworth every 20 minutes.

The 12 (which ran as often as 8 times an hour at one point) become the 712/713/762/765 (the latter 2 extending to Ilkley) - the 713 was withdrawn and replaced by the 903, the frequency of the 712 was reduced to a skeleton service and then the number was withdrawn but with short workings of the 762 replacing the last couple of journeys. The 765 was replaced by extra journeys on the 762 which has since been extended hourly to Harrogate and renumbered to 62.

Other services I remember was an X== from Lancaster-Preston-Southport that used to link in Preston with the X61's. I know that journey is still possible in a way with a change in Preston, but I seem to remember it running via the M6 between Galgate and Fulwood.

That through Lancaster-Southport service only happened because Stagecoach/Ribble had driver problems at Preston and East Lancs (Clitheroe and elsewhere). The express run down the motorway got the coach down to Preston quickly, from where it ran as limited stop to Southport usually with the Morecambe driver in charge. Some Morecambe drivers were rostered motorway to Preston, then on to East Lancs (not sure of exact route Blackburn/Burnley/Clitheroe) and then down the M66 on the Manchester express (precursor to what is now the Witchway service). It wasn't advertised as a through service, but the same driver and bus went the whole way and back. After the East Lancs drivers finally went on strike Stagecoach sold the depots off, so there was no further need to get Morecambe drivers to East Lancs and the service was killed off.
I seem to remember Lancaster City Transport tried a Morecambe-Southport service around the same time and lost money on it.......but then they were daft enough during the summer holidays to run double decker buses on a walk-on Glasgow-Morecambe/Blackpool service

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
In the days of the "Timesaver" brand of West Midlands Travel, the 901 that ran from Birmingham to Walsall via Lichfield no longer exists.

Another one is the 962 that ran between Birmingham and Chelmsley Wood (Coleshill Heath Road) via Aston Expressway, Tyburn Road, Collector Road (the part of the A452 that runs next to the M6), Lanchester Way, and Chelmsley Wood Pine Square.

The 963 used to run between Birmingham and Gannow via Bristol Road, Longbridge, and Rubery.

The 966 used to run between Wolverhampton and Birmingham Airport via Willenhall (Staffordshire), Walsall, Aldridge, Little Aston, Four Oaks, Sutton Coldfield, Six Ways Erdington, Kingsbury Road, Collector Road, Chelmsley Wood, and Bickenhill Lane. Although this no longer runs in its original form, the 966 still exists I believe as running between Six Ways Erdington and Solihull.

There was a 979 that ran between Birmingham and Wolverhampton via Dudley Road Hospital, Cape Hill, Smethwick, Spon Lane, West Bromwich, Guns Village, and the original alignment of the A41 via Wednesbury and Bilston.
