Well yes for some forum members I suppose it is but as a "wake up call" to the realities of life I don't think its a bad thing at all.

The reality of price rises? Wow you think people who are used to buying train tickets need a wake up call? I always knew you were bitter about no longer being young, but this is insulting on a new level. You have no right to criticise someone's hobby, and if you don't like other people getting cheaper tickets than you, I suggest you don't travel by rail. Are you equally pleased when the price of sports spectating goes up, such that people can get a 'wake up call' to the 'realities of life'? What about when there's a sale on that offers fares at 1/2 or 1/4 of the average railcard fare (such as York to London for £5). When that ends, do you welcome everyone back into the' normal world' of never being able to afford to travel anywhere? Travel should be cheap, sustainable and accessible to all. Good luck finding some way of doing that that isn't a train or a bus - and lots of journeys by bus are utterly impractical.

Anyway there is a slim chance I won't be an unemployed 'out-of-touch' (which of us is out of touch?) failure who lives with their mother when this happens several years hence. Slim.

Well if it wasn't an issue surely there would have been no need for this thread!

The question was what (if anything) people have done before their railcard expires, and the OP was simply looking for suggestions as to what else they could do in the next few weeks. I don't think they've really made an "issue" out of it. The clue is (was) in the name - the card is not available to us for ever and I think we all recognise and accept that.

I'm not bitter about anything, despite having just turned 50! Indeed I'm a very happy little soul :) I've not criticised anyone's hobby, I'm just suggesting that people need to accept the need to make compromises! And yes if people have been travelling by train on the cheap for several years after finishing Uni including lording it up in 1st class then yes I don't think a "wake up call" is a bad thing at all!

Life is what you make of it. Only you thinks you're a failure. And I've not read anything on here that suggests that you are not capable of finding employment.

Well some of you do and some of you seem to think that you have a God given right to cheap rail travel for as long as you want it!

Tell me where I've said that I have a god given right to cheap rail travel for as long as I want. Bear in mind that I don't actually believe in god, so I doubt that he/she/it's given me any rights.

Now if you'd bothered to read my post properly you would have noticed that I said that some people seem to think that they have a God given right to cheap train travel. I certainly didn't suggest that you were one of them and nor did I suggest that you believed in God!

(I did read your post properly, and was waiting for an answer like the one above. It brings me onto...)

Then what do you mean by "some of you". Which group are you lumping me in with?

By "you" I suspect he meant "forum members other than him", and I don't think he is lumping you in with anyone, AIUI.

^I'm just trying to understand why he's being relatively bitter over a complete non-issue. And I've never seen anyone suggest that the 16-25 discount should be lifelong.

I don't think you really follow. Doing loads of travelling is about getting good value fares that are already there, the railcard discount just helps. I have already mentioned £20 East Coast First Class tickets which are open to anyone and on sale in huge numbers. The last time I was even in First Class was the super posh (by their own design) GWR First Class on a wedged weekday evening peak train from Paddington to Reading. You can't even use a 16-25 railcard and the trip was still incredible value for money. Sadly none of these skills are even slightly career promoting. In fact the opposite probably applies.

I'm not "bitter" over anything, simply because I accept that life is all about compromises!

... as do I, and I can't see anyone on this thread disagreeing with that

They don't read bitter to me, although I guess the first sentence didn't really come across right, as there was no "issue" here that I can see.

From thereon it probably just sidetracked.

Neither have I. For one, it will be very soon that he's entitled to a Senior Railcard which offers superior terms to a 16-25.

Precisely, "it helps" and I don't see why it should help forever! Indeed you have just proved that you don't need a rail card to get cheap train travel.

I already have a rail card but if I didn't qualify for it I wouldn't kick up a song and dance about it!

So, you reject my previous premise that everyone should have access to sustainable and affordable travel? If you want were arguing from a rationing point of view then maybe I could understand. There's only so much capacity and only so many people can physically travel, and it needs scarce public money to increase that number so we need to prioritise. Absolutely. But what you're saying is not that, it's just that people don't have or need the right to travel, so it should be restricted because you want it to be. And that's why nobody understands your point.
