Nescafe Instant Coffee - Does it Keep ?

I bought a 200g jar of Nescafe Coffee in Poundland the other day for £3.

It has the old brown lid rather than the new Red one which has started adorning the Jars just recently. It is a bit confusing as I'm sure the Decaff version used to be the red topped one.

As my old jar with the red lid purchased at tesco had run out I opened the new jar from Poundland and brewed up.

Now I drink about 10 cups a day so could be considered a nescafe conniseur if that is not a contradiction in terms.

It tasted weird and when I looked at the side of the jar the best before date was May 2016

Surely instant coffee does not deteriorate so quickly after the best before date ?

Have I just got a dodgy jar - it was sealed ok before I opened it.

It's perfectly OK. Dry goods will - if sealed as your jar of instant bilgewater was - keep for ever. Ignore use by dates, they are mostly a con to make you throw stuff away and buy more. Remember granny Wilson's axiom. If it looks alright and smells alright it will be alright.

IMO it was horrible when it was new, so it can't really get any worse...

In reality, the only concern in dried goods like this is internal bacterial growth, that probably wouldn't start until the seal is broken.

I *think* the Poundland Nescafe is a different formula and does taste a bit different.

Only way I've ever known instant coffee go "off" is that sometimes it turns into one solid lump if it gets damp.

Neil beet me to it on the lumpy coffe, our old faithful coffee tin wasnt airtight any more causing our decaf to congeal somewhat. Sadly now consigned to reclycling as of last night

You have hit the nail on the head about the the formula...on further checking today the manufacture date is may 2016 best before 2018

ISTR the formulation is for lower-cost markets - south America possibly? Kenco Rappor is similar (though the supermarkets also have that). Probably similar stuff to Tesco Value Instant Coffee and the likes.

Butts is pleased to report that a trip to Tesco has resulted in my being in posession of the "real mccoy".

I am currently imbibiing said product and enjoying it's smooth flavour and delicate aroma. (along with a Benson & Hedges Gold)

As for the "fake product" it will be consigned to the rear of my cupboards for use only in an emergency.

I used to be a "Maxwell House" Man but that is quite hard to get hold of now.

Note to AlterEgo - their is a subtle difference between the two Nescafes, a bit like that between Benson and Hedges Gold and Benson and Hedges Special Filter Both have similar packaging but the contents are completely different in terms of quality.

When I was at Uni in Bradford we once got a jar of this stuff called "King Cup" from the 24 hour garage on Great Horton Road. It was cheap but tasted like my socks if you barbecued them.

The answer to the question is quite simple - no. I'm so old I can remember the introduction of 'Gold Blend' and what an advertising con (sorry, coup) that was. Pay double and still get a brownish sludge! Drink the real stuff or do without is my motto.

So am I and unfortunately I don't like Gold Blend, prefer the plebian ordinary one. It's not double the price by the way.

Camp Coffee essence with the politically incorrect label....when I first moved to the Midlands in the Eighties my future Mother-In-Law thought that was the height of sophistication - they all drank "Tay"

Don't ignore "use by" dates. They're used on stuff like refrigerated meat that goes off.

It's "best before" dates you can safely ignore, which applies to stuff sold in cans and packets.
