A passenger train has derailed in India killing over 96 people and Injuring many more
Read on at http://metro.co.uk/2016/11/20/at-least-96-dead-after-train-derails-with-many-more-trapped-6270001/
At least 96 people have been killed after a passenger train derailed in northern India.
More than 120 others were hurt after 14 of the train’s carriages left the track near Purwa, a village near the industrial city of Kanpur.
Volunteers and railway police have pulled out the bodies from the mangled coaches and were working to rescue passengers who were trapped in other cars that toppled over, said Daljeet Chaudhary, a director general of police.
Some coaches crumpled as they crashed into others, trapping hundreds of people inside.
Medical teams are providing first aid near the site while the more seriously injured have been moved to hospitals in Kanpur.
It is not immediately clear what caused the coaches to derail....
Never seen a death toll for rail accident so high

There have been several in the previous century in the UK alone. Wikipedia has all the details.

Initial suspicion of investigation team is a cracked rail, though an Indian MP is claiming its sabotage with the aim to discredit the Railways Ministry.

I wouldn't be surprised if those investigating have a pretty shrewd idea already as to the cause.

I well remember after the dreadful incident at Hatfield the BBC interviewed spokesmen from Railtrack and GNER. The line from GNER was that it was too early to speculate on the cause of the accident and we would have to wait for the official report from the investigation, etc. etc.

Then, after a short pause, he said that they did know that their train wasn't at fault!

In the meantime, the spokesman for Railtrack was taking a great deal of interest in his boots...

I wonder if Indian railways will go into panic mode like ours did here after Hatfield and close lumps of the network (I seem to recall most all of Scotland) and put speed restrictions everywhere?
No, I don't think so.

I wondered whether the train involved was one of those occasionally shown on TV, that are so rammed that people are hanging onto the outside, and travelling on the roof? Hardly surprising there was a high death toll if so.

We wondered that.

As far as I know, roof riding and that sort of things essentially happen on suburban trains. On a train qualified as express, you usually cannot purchase a ticket without a reservation so everyone gets a seat, I think.

Also it was said that people were caught in the accident during their sleep so it was a night train which makes roof riding even less possible.

I'm afraid that Indian Railways have a different level of tolerance to death and risk generally than you would find in the UK. Most days in Mumbai several people die on the railway. They don't stop the trains.

It reflects a different approach to death more generally. When it surrounds you all of the time, you become somewhat stoic. And in some cases, reckless.

Despite the name, 'Express' is one of the slower classes of trains. It's definitely possible to ride without a reservation, and in the most basic classes, it can get really rammed. I have seen people riding on the outside, but normally only a few and only for a one or two stations. It's really exhausting trying to hold on to the outside, and people only do it if they are really desperate.

The pictures you sometimes see of trains with hundreds on top are not typical at all. In fact, most of the pictures I have seen like that have been from other countries in South Asia. Indian Railways have been getting increasingly strict.

There are usually a couple of carriages of unreserved second class, which tends to be rammed to the rafters. But that isn't going to be the only reason for the deaths - the coaches are much more basic than the UK, larger cross-section and no doubt weaker and are often compartment stock of some kind, meaning more chance of people getting trapped, and with barred windows...

Probably not, it's not uncommon to see several incidents such is this a year on Indian Railways.

I wonder if they'll just clear everything up quick smart and get things going again without complex and time consuming inquiries?

Many of those are trespassers on the line. the road deaths are even more horrendous!

Apparently those death trap coaches were supposed to have been phased out according to a media report I read the other day... Must be one heck of an undertaking.

And trains in India usually don't have people hanging out the windows or sitting on top on intercity routes.. I suspect going through a tunnel would probably clear out a few of those on top/side.
