I prefer the old ones

These ones put any train behind the first one in tiny text although the platform number is much more clearly marked out to the side of the screen ... they seem quite hard to read from a distance though

Also seems the canopy has been extended at the London end of platform one with I think new bike spaces unless I imagined it

I strongly dislike the new ones becuase they are much harder to read.

I believe that was done as part of the station improvement works.

They have also been installed at Fleet, Basingstoke and Clapham Junction.

One would assume the new Infotec displays offer more features than their predecessors (made by Ferrograph I believe)

If only they were bigger.

Sorry no pictures but there seem to be a different style altogether on one of the platforms at Twickenham. They are just outside the station offices on platforms 4/5. They have white text against a blue and white background (I think)

Photos of the new boards at Southampton attached, they are a slightly different layout to the first of the displays greaterwest has posted earlier.

They look as though they may be more helpful when using split platforms, which is often an issue on P2 and P3 when two trains are in at the same time. That is, they may show either the number only as in the P2 photo, or the part platform as in the P3B photo.

It should in theory make it more obvious which display is referring to which train, however they haven't taken this obvious opportunity to resite the 'B end' displays further down the platform to where the trains actually stop...

The photo of the P3B display shows the problem, it is fitted almost where the front of that Southern 377 has stopped on the inbound service, meanwhile the train it refers to is about 40m further down the platform, behind me.

Ah ha, the same as the ones seen at Sheffield and Birmingham New Street. Wasn't aware SWT had decided to use these now, although it does make sense at Southampton Central.

I think there's also a smaller version of the infotec display that you photted, they are fitted either side of the island platform at Basingstoke specifically because the old type got in the way of signal sighting.

So either side of the waiting room there they have the smallest displays they could find, and the originals were resited towards the platform ends but further away from the platform edge.

I believe the one I posted was exactly the same size. Having seen them in person at Basingstoke, they are very small indeed, and are the same size as the ones at Fleet and Godalming.

I'm more interested in as to why you'd bring to PMS stopper in on 3B rather than A. It only usually sits there for 6 minutes, so would be tricky to bring something in on top of it. But anyway.

Personally I prefer the old style, although the ones in use at Southampton are better than the likes of Fleet or Godalming, my only minor gripe with the old style is when dispatching a train, it's easier to look at CIS screens than my schedule card, but most of the time station signage obscures the scheduled time, only showing the expected time so you get fooled into a false sense of security. Simple answer is to pull schedule card out of pocket i know!

The new ones do allow for descenders (letters with a tail below the line, such as g or p); the old ones didn't, which used to annoy me (but then I'm a proof-reader and thus a dreadful pedant).

The new ones also don't seem to show now many coaches the train is formed of, and where first class is located, or at least it wasn't this morning at Southampton

Correct - They are fitted either side of the Waiting Room / Info Desk / Pumpkin building on Platforms 2 & 3. There is a standard next train to ...... Electronic Board facing you as soon as you reach the top of the stairs and 2 lots of the Ferrograph versions on the island platforms (London and Country ends).

I do agree though, they can be a pain to read due to the smaller size text and nigh on hopeless if the low winter sun reflects off of them.

Agreed. I hope they'll stick to primarily using the Ferrograph screens as they are much easier to read. (Also the text can be set to scroll quicker, I've yet to see an Infotec display with a variable scroll speed)

I agree with you, and I don't think it's pedantic to want to be able to see letters properly displayed - the eye recognises words' shapes (as well as their letters' arrangements) very quickly, and thus it can only add to the quick understanding of displays. However, the screens' comparatively small size probably negates any benefit from this!

From what I have read on here - I've not seen any of the new displays myself - what has been provided does not comply with the requirements of the PRM TSI. In particular 5.3.1.1 which is about readability from a distance.
