Ticket offices and Rovers.

Thats slightly irritating if true, because being a PTE product, they're only supposed to be available within West Yorkshire and (the irritating bit) I haven't at least in the past been able to purchase Greater Manchester System One tickets from stations in West Yorkshire. But local shops sell them via Paypoint.

I've had no problem buying GM Rail Rangers in West Yorkshire touch it's a couple of years since I've tried. West Yorkshire tickets are more annoying as my local station is unmanned so I have to know I need a day rover when on a previous trip or get a scratch off ticket from one of the half dozen places that still sells them with fairly short opening hours.

The Anglia Plus One Day Ranger is advertised as only available at Abellio Greater Anglia stations, or on train if starting from an unstaffed station. I tried buying one at Kings Lynn, along with a day return to Ely, but the staff refused quite rudely, in fact. It meant that I had just 5 mins at Ely to run through the subway to the booking office, and fortunately there was no queue. I just caught the Ipswich train with a minute to spare. Probably GTR staff being awkward. I've purchased Anglia Plus Day Rangers at Stevenage without any problem whatsoever.

I don't think any amount of codes or anything would have helped her. She could only find something for £102 or similar of which I couldn't find anything. I wanted a pair of them with a two together card anyway but sadly she couldn't find one let alone apply a railcard discount to it.
Retford to the rescue though on the day and the trip(s) went well. One day in the next 300 years I might get to write a trip report.

For what u requested is £96 for 2 if I am looking at the correct ticket, which I am pretty sure I am. It's not too hard to find the correct products. It's a shame not all employees have the initiative to look around the tributes/fastis machines or call an colleague for advice

Aren't you entitled to buy a West Yorkshire Day Rover on the train if travelling from an unmanned station?

Yes, but the ones issued on the train are only valid on the trains (and the ones issued on the bus are only valid on the buses).

You can exchange the one issued on the train for one on the proper stock at a ticket office for free though. I've done this before at Leeds

I'm not sure how that helps if they won't issue bus+train ones on the train. Particularly annoying as a family day rover is cheaper than 2 off-peak returns from my local station to Leeds when we don't have a 2 Together cards.

Not a Bus and Train Rover, no. You are supposed to buy a scratch card in advance, but WYMetro have cut back the sales of these to bus stations in large towns and some undefined TICs. They used to be widely available, including post offices.

I agree. I've never been able to buy one on the train, most guards are knowledgeable enough to know they should only be issued on the special stock. In days of yore they always let me travel free to Halifax to buy one when Hebden Bridge station was unexpectedly unstaffed, but that probably isn't wise with number of RPIs around today.

I just keep a stock of scratch cards now.

Thinking more about it. I think mine was issued by a suburban London station, not on a train, hence the lack of proper stock for my original ticket.

Who are "they"???

Assuming you mean guards on trains, then they may issue Family day rovers on the train on incorrect stock. They shouldn't and many won't - the rules don't allow it.

Similarly the PTEs of Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire set rules that their products are only sold at stations within the PTE area. You may be able to buy them outside the area, ticketing systems may not prevent them being sold, but if staff know the rules and choose to follow them, they won't be sold.

I've been refused a couple of times when I've asked - when it was worth it just for the rail travel we were doing. Are there recent changes to the issuing instructions guards have been given?

Family day rover issued on normal railway stock. OK. Bus drivers a bit iffy as it was a railway ticket so only used it on the journeys I needed to after discussions that I wasn't aware of restrictions they let me on.
Later I did ask representative of Northern Rail and wy Metro and they did confirm that Family tickets issued on the train were indeed only valid on the train, and was informed as such next time I bought one (this wasn't a problem as we were only doing rail journeys on that occasion)

Whatever you've been told, I have just confirmed with a contact at WYMETRO that there have been no changes to the availability of Family Bus And Train Dayrover tickets and they should only be available from ticket offices/ on scratchcards only and not issued on the train. If there is any update to these conditions it would be published on the WYMETRO website and is nothing to do with Northern, new franchise or not.

Addition: If Train and Bus DayRovers are sold on normal ticket stock passengers have a ticket with "West Yorkshire Bus and Train" and Validity: As Advertised printed on it (and it is advertised as valid on buses), then the passenger could reasonably expect it to be valid on buses and can't just be told verbally it is valid only on trains. But there is no agreement with the bus companies that it is valid on buses.

Stupid I know, but that's the situation.

GTR staff being awkward. You can buy at ANY National Rail ticket office and it is advertised as such. I bought one last week at Tiverton Parkway (operated by GWR)

So saying it is only available (or advertised as only available) at AGA stations is nonsense.

It has been pointed out to me, that the West Yorkshire Family Day Rover was designed such that the word Family is not printed on the ticket, and appears only on the special ticket stock.

Unless this has changed, I wouldn't risk taking others round West Yorkshire with a ticket printed on normal stock, with only the price identifying it as a Family ticket. I can see the reaction of some of Northern's RPIs now.
