Used my season ticket in one of the barriers at Wigan Wallgate yesterday and was pleasantly surprised to find that it accepted my ticket (Littleborough- Appley Bridge). I was expecting it to reject it like the one at Manchester Oxford Road does.

Some barriers are set up to accept any in-date ticket. These ones may well be because they are quite new.

When the ones at Leeds were new they went through varying periods of accepting nothing, then accepting everything when they were given up on! They're still lousy for season tickets, you need two or three replacements a year if you put them through the barriers most of the time, rather than going through a manned gate.

I was on a train to Leeds the other day and someone was asking the guard about how the 'new paper tickets' aren't accepted (the ones with only the barcode), and he said that the barriers were being upgraded. Has anyone else heard anything? Are they going to replace the whole line or just add scanners?

Apologies if this should be in the New ticket types thread.

I don't understand why we didn't go with the Trenitalia style system of scanning a QR code on the ticket to get through the barriers. That way tickets from ticket offices, machines, home printers and mobile devices are all accepted by the barriers and if the ticket size changes or what it's printed on changes the barriers still work.

Please ... this is not Italy. The usual suspects have told us, frequently, that foreign ideas "will not work here".

Been having a couple of issues with the central Manchester gates lately, the ones at Victoria won't accept Stalybridge-Moston (trying to enter the platforms at Vic on an OUT portion) amongst other tickets.
Oxford Road rejected the return portion of a Stalybridge-Levenshulme CDR too, not sure if that's right or not (I'd cycled up from Levenshulme having *just* missed a train), but the barrier guy let me through (think he recognises me though and doesn't ask questions).

Stalybridge-Moston shouldn't you be changing within Victoria and not need to exit the barriers? Probably why its throwing up issues if your trying to enter Victoria.

Have virgin installed the barriers at Piccadilly yet?

Yes - these are also unable to read rangers/rovers such as the recent Northern promotion. A guard I spoke to there, the same one that was the guard on the final old Northern, said its because they sell relatively few over the years its not worth programming in... Which i found amazing as they should be inputted with all possible tickets permitted.

On a slightly related note, I did notice one or two passengers getting their tickets at MAN after getting off Crewe services from Virgin staff (even though they had got off a Northern service).

Were not the Northern barrier staff by Platform 11? That is were they should have been directed to?

Break of Journey would be perfectly permitted...

You can on a full price ticket but Not if its an off peak, if its off peak you can only break journey if it cant be completed in one day or need to leave the station to change trains.

You most certainly can on an Off Peak ticket, that is unless the restriction code says otherwise.

I think you have misunderstood. You can break your journey overnight onlyif the journey cannot be completed the same day. A same-day break of journey is not prohibited by most Off-Peak tickets, including these ones.

The restriction after 16:00 and before 18:30 includes any connecting train departing during this period (or re-commencing your journey following a break of journey) within the following areas:

So not only is it not disallowed, they even mention it in the restrictions!

In any case, going through the barriers is not a break of journey, leaving the station would be, but going to a shop on the concourse wouldn't be.

That doesn't say you can break your journey. In fact it says you have to pause your journey in some circumstances! For example, if you alight the first train at 16:15 you can't then board the second train to complete your journey until at least 18:30 unless you have paid the excess.

The full restrictions for that ticket indicate BOR is permitted provided it doesn't result in you breaching the ND restriction in doing it.

Correct, it does not say you can't. Note the double negative, and lacking that means that it's allowed.

But it does say

"or re-commencing your journey following a break of journey"

specifically confirming that you can.

Break of journey is always permitted unless otherwise restricted, for example
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/VN

"Outward Travel: Break of journey is not permitted."

I don't see why it's wrong for me to not be allowed in through the Vic gates on Stalybridge-Moston - what if I'd come from Stalybridge via Manchester Piccadilly?

It's not wrong -- WatcherZero is incorrect. On all Stalybridge-Moston tickets you are allowed to start or end or break your journey at Victoria (subject to any time restrictions on the 'off peak return')

Automatic barriers don't work on every possible valid ticket, on of their many issues, however if the staff do not allow you through I do believe that they are
breaching the conditions of their franchise and should be duly punished.

Slight change of plan in regards to the barriers and installation list. Blackburn barriers will now be installed at Salford Central instead in the not too distant future. That will leave just Deansgate and half of Piccadilly as the last bastions for free travel in the city centre.

The scheme for Blackburn has been caped then?

Sorry for late reply, only just seen this

For them to have been directed to the Northern staff, they would have had to cross over to another platform using the bridge - not suitable for some. I presume this is some kind of local arrangement

I beg leave to remind the Honourable Member for Rochdale that there are no barriers at Ardwick (a city centre station) and there are no plans to do so in the near future

I still fail to understand why the DaFT specified separate gates for VT at Piclydicly rather than just gating the entire station in one go.

Do the barriers around Manchester accept Metrolink ticket stock? I think you can buy a certain ticket that covers tram and rail (and bus)?

Metrolink tickets do not have magstripes, so no. But yes you can purchase a range of tickets from Metrolink TVMs for onward travel on trains.

I think one train a day in each direction calls at Ardwick. You'd have to be pretty smart to outsmart the authorities by planning your life around this stations timetable.

And based on the locality, you'd then have to negotiate getting to and from the the city proper with your life still intact.

There is also (finally) a 'Gourmet' food/coffee kiosk! Not in the platform 1/3 cafe though - rather oddly, it's in the ticket hall.. :-?

Has the freeloaders exit on platform 4 been gated ?

Couple board at Moses Gate. At Bolton the woman heads towards the stairs. "No !" says the man "If we got out this way you don't have to pay".
