Can't think of many people who I'd less like to hear, can't stand her or her accent.

I'm sure NR could have found someone with, let's say, "wider appeal".

I also really dislike this woman's voice to the extent that when I hear those horrible bingo adverts she does, I switch off.

Someone like John Cleese or Rowan Atkinson on the other hand, I'll go and sit on the station all day :D

Oh please no!! It's bad enough hearing that creepy child's voice telling passengers the tracks are for trains and not playing games. I think I might start using buses instead if Windsor's voice shouts out across stations.....

It was originally going to be Bill Nighy but he had to pull out for some reason.

Whether you like her voice or not is fairly irrelevant to be fair. It's a great cause and anything that helps raise money and awareness is a good thing.

Presumably she has recorded a "sod off" announcement which will be automatically triggered when someone not wearing a poppy passes through the gateline.

Bill Nighy would have been so much better...

Indeed, can you imagine platforms full of peak period commuters being bombarded with blue shiny balls...

Isn't that a naked Smurf then?

Or Brian Blessed, you certainly would have heard the announcements :)

We're sorry to announce the 1705 service is cancelled due to a man being hit by a train... But don't worry, GORDON'S ALIVE!!!

Can't think of many things worse than being spoken to about the Poppy Appeal by Barbara Windsor.

I'm saddened by some of the remarks on here. I find nothing objectionable about her accent, and having socialised with her I must say that I've found her a very genuine sensitive and compassionate person.

Poor actress with a horrendous voice that you really wouldn't want to listen to, what on earth did NR think by giving her a job.
Surely in the whole country one person could have been found without such a highly irritating voice.

We are sorry to announce that there are severe delays around the Reading area this evening, this is due to BIG TOMATOES!

Didn't he do an announcement at Waterloo a few years ago talking about the charity "Samaritans"? I seem to remember it being quite ironic because I think that someone got hit by a train down the line at Earlsfield the same day.

South Londoners don't often like to stick up for North Londoners (and in this context East London counts as North, right?) but I agree with you wholeheartedly. I met her in 2000 when she was a guest speaker at the Booksellers' Association conference in Brighton, flogging her autobio of course, but she was approachable, witty and, I hate to admit it, but, sexy too. Now, on the other hand, Wendy Richard and Martine McCutcheon.....:)

Did someone just say she does the bingo ads??!

She sounds good on the TV but my ears would probably die if they make it as loud and echoey as the announcments at Leeds.

Oh well, as long as it is for the greater good of the poppy appeal...

Will Greenwood must be breathing a sigh of relief, they've finally found a more irritating voice to drone on over every PA system on the network!
Unfortunately my work location means I'm mandated to listen to whatever/whoever is on the PA repeatedly for hours on end so I'm less than thrilled by this news (especially as the advert with herself proclaiming "GET YER ANS ON ARE BIG BLUE BAWWZ" with the vacant, pained expression of a condemned man seems to be on telly every 11 seconds or so at the moment.
Hopefully the recorded announcements don't override the PA announcements made live by station staff (it has been known to happen)

The Rugby bloke?

Yup, for those fortunately unaware he lent his voice to a series of adverts encouraging the great unwashed to "check before they travel" during the Rugby World Cup last year (regardless of their irritation factor they were effective, as at least in the London area most passengers were well prepared for the onslaught)
Whilst not particularly irritating in themselves, the adverts were repeated ad nauseam throughout the period. Anyone's voice would be irritating if repeated that many times, but the fact that he loudly announced his name and that he was a "Former England International" (what do you want, a paper hat?) at the start of the advert, and mumbled the rest of the advert, including the website address that the advert was meant to publicise, meant it rubbed a lot of people up the wrong way. Or maybe I shouldn't read too much into it, it's only an announcement after all.

This is seriously OT, but for anyone who hasn't heard it, the audiobook of his autobiography is THE BEST THING EVER.

She has a recognisable voice so im unsure what the problem is?

Its not as if she is going to be in any character that she has played either in adverts or on telly & film so im unsure of the problem.

The problem that I have with Barbara Windsor doing announcements is that I don't think she is well suited to such a role. This has nothing to do with her accent, what kind of person she is, and I have nothing against the woman at all. My big fear is that NR will want her to be the caricature that she appears to be on the adverts she has done, and if I'm right that would only serve to undermine the very campaign which is supposed to be being supported.

I'm prepared to be proven wrong, so if Ms Windsor can do the announcements while avoiding any urge or instructions to lapse into Carry On, Peggy Mitchell or bingo advert mode, then I'll be absolutely delighted.
