Pubs In York

G'day everyone,

Can anyone recommend a pub in York that is close to the NRM and the railway station.

To narrow the search down a bit the pub needs to sell real ale and food although nothing too elaborate. I also refuse to pay anymore than £3.50 a pint outside of London and I'm not prepared to make any exceptions for York

Any suggestions?

Brigantes.

It's only a 6 min walk from York station (and there are two routes you can take, the other route being via Station Rise, which will add interest, taking you past the site of the old railway station)

When are you there?

Last time I was there, it took me about an hour to get away as I kept recognising people I know!

York Tap is actually on the station between platforms 3 & 4. Very good selection of real ales within the price bracket you stated. Not sure if they do food but there are several outlets on York station. Also,within 5 minutes walk of the station is The Maltings which definitely serves food as well as decent ale.

Alternatively there is The Maltings, just by Lendal Bridge. Limited food times though.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH pubs in York. Where to begin????

Assuming you like decent ale and a quiet chav free pint then Brigantes, York Tap, Maltings are the best ones near the station although there are other good ones not far away.

The Ackorne is a good one but a bit of a walk. The same for the Trafalgar Bay or the Fox Inn which is a bit of a walk the other way. There is also the York Brewery Tap Room on Toft Green. If you want the usual's there are a couple of Wetherspoons types near the Micklegate Bar

Further afield there are good ones at Three Legged Mare on High Petergate (next to the minster) or the Yorkshire Terrier on Stonegate. The Golden Ball on Cromwell Road is decent and who could miss House of Trembling Madness or the Evil Eye lounge. There is also Pivni at Patrick Pool and the Tiny Blue Bell on Fossgate.

Not sure yet Yorkie I've got some annual leave which must be taken by the end of Feb but I've got to fit it in around the usual work commitments.

The Golden Fleece (16 Pavement) is also good, and does food, but it's a bit of a walk from the station.

The Ackhorne on St Martins lane is just round the corner from Brigantes, it's good but I'm not sure if it does food.

I don't think the Ackhorne does food, I didn't think the Maltings did either but it does according to its website. I prefer Brigantes, although I'm unsure if you'll get any beer there for £3.50! Mind you, it keeps the riff-raff out :P

We ate and drank in the Exhibition this spring, & had no complaints. (can't remember the prices though.)

Now then!! I'll try Brigantes first and if the prices are plain daft perhaps move on to the Maltings. Having said that I will do my best to visit a couple of pubs before heading home regardless of what I think of the prices at Brigantes.

My £3.50 rule is purely out of principle in that too many pubs are trying to turn real ale into a "premium brand" when it should be a product for everyone to enjoy.

Nobody seems to have mentioned Spoons yet. The Punch Bowl only a few minutes walk away from the station.

Been there a couple of times and the atmosphere was certainly nowhere near as enjoyable as the other pubs mentioned. Although the prices are of course very cheap.

I'll also put in a word for the Volunteer Arms, Watson Street, which can be reached by a footpath between the station and the NRM and a footbridge over the avoiding line. However, I'm not sure about any food offering.

The Volley used to be really rough but got taken over and improved. I actually meant the Fox was a bit of a walk but wasn't very clear. It is an Ossett though.........

Can highly recommend The Maltings and York Brewery Tap. Pub on the station is very busy and quite expensive compared to what is available a short work away.
