Staff Free Travel Perks

Hello all!

Just wondered if anyone can answer a question for me relating to staff perks. I have applied for trainee train driver for Thameslink, and I wanted to know if someone can explain to me how the free travel works.

I ask because my partner commutes from Brighton to London every day for work and want to know if that would be free, or discounted at all?

Using a pass to commute to work will result in potential dismissal should your partner be caught, your responsible for all passes being used correctly.

Your partner can get a travel pass if you live at the same address, not sure if there is a time limit on employment before you can apply. You will get free travel straightaway

Not quite all the answers. Individual TOCs usually grant more extensive facilities than the RDG "all industry" passes allow. On Virgin WC example, dependent childen do (did?) get free leisure passes for travel on Virgin only.

Yes, up to 16yrs old or until they leave education.
For leisure and travel to an educationally facility.

On my TOC dependants and spouses can get season tickets at 75% off, as well as their free leisure travel. Hopefully GTR are the same?

Bonjour.

You and your partner would get free travel on Thameslink, Southern, Gatwick Express, Great Northern, South Eastern and London Midland (all Govia franchises until they change). Your partners' pass will be for leisure travel only. You don't need to be married but you do need to cohabit.

You and your partner will also get an ATOC card giving 75% off of walk-up off peak rail travel (again, leisure only for both of you and only standard class).

After one years service you'll also get the European FIP card which offers discount on Eurostar and EU rail operators.

I can understand Charles Pee's post coming across as being slightly aggressive and presumptuous however it is a very important point. I'm sure he means no harm.

Generally speaking partner passes are for leisure use only. No residential travel. I won't say I am 100% sure although I can't really think of any exception off the top of my head, even with TOC passes and reciprocal travel arrangements. Residential travel normally only available to staff, where applicable.
