If I am holding a valid "West Midlands Day Ranger" and a valid "East Midlands Rover 3 in 7 days", can I use a service that goes non-stop from coverage of one of the ticket's areas to the other ?

I mean, for example, if I want to catch a non-stop train from Milton Keynes Central (a station in the East Mids coverage only) which runs non-stop to Crewe (in the West Mids area only) would I be valid?

Thanks

The National Rail Conditions of Travel could be read in a couple of ways, but my preferred reading is that yes, you can, under Condition 14.2. The previous National Rail Conditions of Carriage would definitely have allowed it, under Condition 19c, so I don't think you'll have much of an issue. There is potential for a Guard to say no, but it's such a small chance that it's not worth worrying about.

On a strict reading, no I don't think it is valid any more. But any company trying to enforce the new restriction would look ridiculous, the company trying to claim you were intending not to pay while you were claiming you had already paid twice for a large overlapping part of the journey! (And if you had paid less, so there was no overlap, then it would have clearly been valid.)

My reading of 14.2

With these maps

> If the train sails through Tamworth or Nuneaton without stopping 14.2 allows for a combination of those two ticket types to be valid.

> Similarly MK-Crewe.

I'd tweet the relevent train company before travelling, just to have a copy to show to any Senior Conductors / TMs who try state otherwise :)

Surely under condition 14.2 the "crossover point" between the WM Day Rover and the EM Ranger could be any one of Rugby, Nuneaton, Polesworth (?!), Atherstone, Tamworth, Lichfield TV, Rugeley or Stafford, (plus Long Buckby and Northampton if a train were running via the Northampton loop). If 14.2 means what it says in plain English then there can be absolutely no doubt that the ticket combination is valid for a fast MK - Crewe run.

I'm sure that's the intent, but 14.2 specifically says "and the last station at which one Ticket is valid and the first station that the other Ticket is valid are the same", which means such a long overlap would not permit them to be used together without the train calling. If "valid" were replaced with "used", then I think it would be better.
