Just after the doors closed on my 450 the tannoy and PIS both announced "Train ready to leave - Please stand clear"

This seems new? Is it linked to the doors closing on the train feeding back into the platform?

Happens at many busy SWT stations, IIRC they basically add it to the automatic script for the announcements associated with known busy departures.

It isn't linked to what's going on with the train doors, and as far as I know would still be heard even if no doors opened on that rare day that no passengers happened to turn up...

It's not even rigged into the signalling, often at guildford you'll be waiting the road (a late running GWR) and it'll announce it.

These station anouncements are used at most South West Trains / Southern / Southeastern stations. If im thinking of the same one it says "Please stand clear from the train at platform (number). This train is ready to leave.". Ive never heard of these announcements on board the trains though.

I suspect it is linked to the signalling indirectly, in other words it is timed to go off so many seconds after a previous 'normal' announcement, probably the one that is triggered by the incoming train arriving in the platform.

It's definitely linked to the signalling at Woking. On Platform 3 (the up bay) it will play either 30 seconds before departure if you have a proceed aspect, or immediately before you get a proceed aspect otherwise.

The way it blanks the PIS is extremely unhelpful - it is likely to cause people to make a last minute decision to board the wrong train (not *not* to board as I suspect it is intended to do, particularly as in doing so it blanks the 2nd/3rd train too).

I have heard similar ones too with GWR at Paddington, and a few ATW stations (Cardiff, Shrewsbury). The announcement is something like "The train at platform 3 is the xx.xx Arriva Trains Wales service to Carmarthen, calling at... *insert stations*. Please can passengers intending to travel on this service, join the train now, as it is ready to leave. Platform 3 for the xx.xx service to Carmarthen which is ready to leave."

"Please stand clear of the doors" would be much more effective than GWR's "Do not attempt to board or leave the train when the doors are closing" on board announcement IMO.

Ah, that's the announcement you get at Euston as well. I think it's auto-triggered 2 minutes before departure. FWIW, it has me almost screaming "depart - the word is depart!" :)

The one I am less of a fan of is the one used on Southeastern and Southern that also blanks the platform display.

This is a new thing I have only recently seen, Brookwood has been doing it for about a month or two. Woking doesn't appear to do this, but Guildford does.

Why of all stations they chose Brookwood, when it has no dwell time unlike Woking or Farnborough I'll never know.

This is the whole point, the 2nd and 3rd trains won't be going anywhere until the 1st one has gone, so I don't see how it's unhelpful at all. Southern have been doing this for years at their stations. It's a new thing to SWT from what I've seen recently.

"Platform X for the hh:mm GWR service to Destination, which is ready to leave." seems to be a London Paddington favourite

Heard it once or twice at Cardiff too.

It's unhelpful because it denies you the opportunity to know what it is you are (or aren't) boarding at the last minute, what you are about to miss, or if you needn't panic because it's the second train you want or the second train will do.

If it worked like it does on DB, where the guard (remember them) initiates the departure announcement and PIS clearing when he is actually going to close the doors, it would be fine. But on Southern it can occur some time before the doors are actually closed.

It is very passenger-unfriendly.

On the topic of this, a train being in a platform will be recognised by a headcode being in a particular train describer berth and therefore the announcement will play as long as the train is present in this particular berth. Obviously you'll always be in this berth if you are in the platform, even with the signal at red at the end.

However the difference with a bay platform is there are generally two berths (sometimes more), and the information system generally only looks at the departure berth (the one you jump from when you pass the signal), and the headcode will generally only go to the departure berth when the signal clears - headcodes are generally setup at the buffers.

It has been used by SWT for years too, however SWT seem to adopt it for particular trains, and don't go for the slapdash Southern all stations all trains approach.

That's used all over the country, Kings Cross, Euston and Paddington all have it automatically setup to play for trains, anywhere else with any ATOS announcers can play it at the click of a mouse!

Indeed, in fact you're right about Euston and King's X using it too, it would be silly to use it anywhere else though, even if it is an option ;)

Arrive within plenty of time of your train and there won't be a problem. Plan ahead.

It probably makes sense to use it for any train where it will lay over at the station for a period of time. A reasonable generic rule would be trains where arrival and departure are more than, say, 5 minutes apart.

It used to be common to do a manual version of it - "on platform 2 please board the train and close the doors, this train is ready for departure" - Preston always used to do that one, with a nice rhythm to it. And of course there is the classic DB "Bitte einsteigen, Tueren schliessen selbsttaetig, Vorsicht bei der Abfahrt" one, though that is slowly dying out as the DOO departure procedure doesn't use it.

The PIS at Nuneatin announced 'please stand clear from the train at platform 5 this train is ready to depart' today for my train. In all the times I've worked through there or anywhere else I've never ever heard that announcement!

Like the announcement "Please stand clear. This train does not stop here". I think this was in respect of terminating trains in Platform 1 at Bristol TM. If it didn't stop just imagine the scene apart from knocking the stop blocks down.
