The RMT have badly let down their members. The whole DOO debacle on Southern has been handled poorly by the union. As soon as it was mentioned, there should have been an all-out strike across their network. It would have taken only around a week to get GTR round the table to thrash out a (good) deal for Conductors.
GTR offered the 2 grand, and the RMT said that "safety wasn't for sale" at any price, and that members weren't to sign the new contract. The deadline for the 2 grand expired on the thursday, on friday morning the RMT advise members to sign the contract. They said they needed to seek legal advice. Really?? They would have known all along the conductors would have to sign it. This whole episode has really destroyed my faith in my trade union - with a regional organiser as crap as ours, we'll be deeply in it when my TOC try to get shot of conductors.
