The sinking ship group assessment

Anyone familiar with this group activity? I remember years a go I did a lost at sea exercise for a CSA role i went for with CrossCountry. I've got a group activity coming up for job I've applied for with Virgin and rumor is that its going to be the sinking ship exercise where you have to save 6 people out of 12. If anyone has done please get in touch.

These group exercises are common.

There isn't really a right answer to the sinking ship scenario. The assessment is about how you conduct yourself, articulate your views, and respect the views of others.

Be neither the group leader nor a silent wallflower. Make relevant contributions. Let others have a say. It's the easiest exercise ever if you obey those rules.

I had a similar exercise for a job with ITV a few years ago. They're not interested in who you save & who stays on board. They're looking at your communication skills. As AlterEgo said it's about giving your views while listening to others.

It is the Kobayashi Maru test isn't it? It is a no win situation. Surely they are looking to test character, thought processes, logic, commuication, group dynamic etc

What if you don't believe in no win scenarios?

Just tell them that it is a mental exercise, no-one is going to die, so you are off to check tickets

Had interesting discussion with Maria Zywica HR director of XC regarding this very exercise. Wanted to know why a no right answer scenario gained a right answer all of a sudden. Never actually directly answered why, just a lot of excuses.

I attended a group assessment day for a VT ticket office role six or seven years ago.

We did two group exercises: life raft (determining which objects to use/what actions to take to save ourselves) and space ship (deciding which people/occupations merited a place on a mission to another planet). As I recall, the 'right' answer to the former scenario was to set fire to part of the raft(!) to attract the attention of a passing rescue ship.
