I know there are working trains on Alderney (well, one carriage I think?) and the Isle of Wight of course.
Is there any more working stock in the UK: maybe on heritage lines, and is there any rusting away in farmer's fields, or even been turned into restaurants or bars?
Worldwide??
Thanks!

In London

I'm sure TfL have a range of heritage stock that comes out from time to time.

Go to an Acton Depot open day. They've preserved at least one carriage of every type of train to run on the Underground. There's also some '83 Stock carriages in use near Haggerston (?) as offices.

Head to the Isle of Wight if you want an interesting ride. 1938 stock trains still in daily service!

Otherwise, +1 to the London Transport Museum and the Acton Depot open days - there's actually one this weekend, if you're able to make it. LUL do retain a 1938 stock unit which makes occasional heritage trips, but this is currently undergoing a programme lift.

The odd tube car is also preserved privately, including the offices at Shoreditch, the Walthamstow Pump House museum and at Quainton Road. There's also a (replica) C stock car in an office at Aldgate, plus two others (Plumstead Primary school and Greenwich UTC).

Thanks everyone. Acton sounds good, but too late for next w/e. Pity they are all down south; is there anything @ York?
I'd like to see the stock in use as offices and the school - is it a classroom? - it would be interesting to see what state they are in.

In Bolton they have an airliner body which is going to be used as a restaurant! Behind scaffolding and sheets just now.

The Alderney Railway has two driving coaches of 1959 tube stock. They used to have two driving coaches of 1938 stock but these were scrapped and replaced with the current stock.

Woolwich UTC has a C stock car in use as a classroom.

An office next to Aldgate East station has the cab of a C stock car in the reception area.

Buckinghamshire Railway Centre has a preserved set of stock.

Traditionally, a military site (and so off-limits to the public) at Pigs Bay, near Shoeburyness in Essex, has been a favoured location for withdrawn tube trains to sit and rot. Not sure what the current situation is though...

Early in the morning in the autumn winter the rail adhesian trains can be seen making the way back to depot. usually on the ruislip branch of the central line but occasionally at wembley park depot too.

There'll be Tube Trains rolling around Coventry soon.
Vivarail have converted D-Stock to diesel running, and they have a few at their base right now.

Actually the Met is far more likely than the Central line.

Three Rail Adhesion Trains run: the Met, which is part of a Timetable Notice and will run several times a day and is based out of Neasden; the east end Central line train, running as required to a Special Train Notice in the early morning and late evening and based at Hainault; the west end Central line train, also running ad required to an STN in the early morning and late evening, but based at Ruislip.

Suppose I should also point out the Track Recording Train, which is formed of two ex-1960 DMs and a 1973 trailer and runs across the network (bat the W&C) every fee weeks. There's also the 1960 stock train (with 1938 stock trailer) owned by Craven Heritage Trains and based at Ruislip, and a train of 1962 stock owned by the same organisation at Hainault. The latter has never operated since preservation, and the former operated briefly in 2014 but not since due to an incident.

I missed the above off my original post, although it doesn't seem to have mattered considering the amount of repetition of the same points I made... ??????

There is some 1983 stock up in Buxton, i don't know how accessible they are to the public though. Think they are on some kind of training site for the emergency services.

A few which spring to mind which haven't been mentioned thusfar:

# 1959 stock car used as office space at Morden Depot (don't think it's readily visible though).

# 1959 stock car used for fire service training at Denton near Gravesend (can be seen on aerial photos).

# 1983 stock car used for fire service training at Barmston Mere near Sunderland.

There are a small handful of 1959 stock cars preserved with the intention of one day making up a complete unit. These have moved around and changed owner a few times and I've lost track of the current position. If I remember rightly they may now be stored in a (rather large!) back garden next to the railway line between Salisbury and Gillingham.

There's the beautifully preserved 4-car rake of loco-hauled carriages built for the Metropolitan Railway Chesham branch in 1898 (the "Ashbury" set) which plied between Chesham and Chalfont & Latimer until electrification in 1962 (?, may have been one or two years earlier), and is now on the Bluebell Railway, together with a Metropolitan milk van.

This set frequently travels to other locations, such as the Epping-Ongar railway, is often used for filming - general representation of Victorian railwayana - and ran on the Circle and District lines in 2013 during the 150 anniversary celebrations.

There are a couple of the classic skirted COP cars that used to run on on the Circle and District lines and Uxbridge branch, plus some Metropolitan T stock and a few tube cab ends, and lots more, at the Quainton Road museum on the closed Great Central route near Aylesbury - see www.brc-stockbook.co.uk/Underground.htm.

This line is to be reopened as part of the Chiltern Beeching reversal initiative, so the character of that museum will change a bit.

Does anyone else here find it just just a bit ironic that TFL /LUL were ever so pleased to be running the preserved Ashburys set for their 150th that their predessors had sold to a private organisation but that they flatly refuse nowadays to allow anyone to buy old tube stock
( ie someone who psts on District Dave tried very hard to buy a 67 but was flatly refused)

Indeed, requests for an A Stock car and a C Stock car were refused as well, although they gladly 'donate' cars of C and D Stock to schools, colleges and Institutions.

Seemingly randomly, what benefit does the C Stock serve at UTC Greenwich?

Last I checked, it's graffitied and non-functional. Shame considering all the effort, favours and free labour that was called upon to put it there...

Similarly, what is a school going to do with a D78 DM Car? Play with all the buttons in the cab and click the switches in the camshafts?

My understanding was that the unit for Greenwich was to help the students learn about the different electrical and pneumatic systems on the train as part of a drive to get people into the rail industry.

Rather unsuccessfully as I can see. C Stock is far from modern and doesn't really reflect modern electrical, mechanical or pneumatic systems on rolling stock. As an aside to this, LU has been spending the last few years moving as many apprentices as possible away from maintaining the conventional fleets they've potentially trained on, and move them onto maintaining the likes of S Stock, further increasing the growing issue of skills gaps, as many of the specialist maintainers, testers etc will be retiring in the coming years.

All underfloor equipment and bogies have been removed.

Indeed it has, but it is far from the only camshafts provided on board...

I can think of at least six in the first 2m of the car....
