UKIP's Steven Woolfe in hospital 'after altercation'

UKIP leadership hopeful Steven Woolfe was taken to hospital following an altercation at a meeting of party MEPs, interim leader Nigel Farage has said.
In a statement he said Mr Woolfe had "subsequently collapsed" and his "condition is serious".

Mr Woolfe, MEP for the North West, was taken to hospital in Strasbourg for tests.

Mr Woolfe announced on Wednesday he will stand for the party's leadership after Diane James stepped down.

In his statement, Mr Farage said: "I deeply regret that following an altercation that took place at a meeting of UKIP MEPs this morning that Steven Woolfe subsequently collapsed and was taken to hospital. His condition is serious."

UKIP MEP Roger Helmer told the BBC the incident followed "some lively exchanges" at a closed meeting of party MEPs on Thursday morning. He said the gathering happened "a good two hours" before a voting session from which he understood Mr Woolfe left.

Raheem Kassam, the other candidate to have declared for the UKIP leadership so far, tweeted his best wishes for Mr Woolfe, as did ex deputy chairwoman Suzanne Evans.

Mr Kassam tweeted that he had cancelled his appearance on BBC2's Daily Politics "out of respect" for Mr Woolfe, following reports he had been taken ill.

He added: "I really hope @Steven-Woolfe is okay. Plz send him your best wishes."

Ms Evans, who is said to be considering her own leadership bid, tweeted: "Shocked to hear Steven Woolfe has apparently collapsed in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Wishing him well for a speedy recovery."

Speaking on Wednesday's Radio 4's PM programme, Steven Woolfe says he recently considered joining the Conservative Party

Diane James said on Twitter: "My thoughts are with @Steven-Woolfe and his wife and daughter at this anxious time and I wish Steven a speedy and full recovery."

Lisa Duffy, who stood in the previous UKIP leadership contest, told the BBC she had known Mr Woolfe before his daughter was born and had attended his wedding: "Today's news is devastating for everybody concerned and I can't possibly speculate on what's actually happened."

Bill Etheridge, also a former UKIP leadership contender and an MEP for the West Midlands and Dudley, tweeted: "Hoping all is well and wishing @Steven_Woolfe all the best after he was taken ill today in Strasbourg."

Mr Farage said on Wednesday he would return as UKIP's interim leader until a fresh election could be held to find Ms James's successor.

Ms James announced her resignation after just 18 days in the job, citing professional and personal reasons for her decision.

She succeeded Mr Farage on 16 September after he resigned following the Brexit vote.

Mr Woolfe was unable to take part in the previous UKIP leadership race after he missed the deadline for submitting his nomination.

Reports suggest Woolfe was attacked by the UKIP defence spokesman Mike Hookem MEP. He then returned to the EU Parliament and collapsed shortly afterwards. Unconfirmed reports that Hookem is now on the run from the authorities.

Whatever your views on UKIP, this is a really sad indication of the state of British politics, and I wish Mr Woolfe a full and prompt recovery.

From the live page that the BBC are currently running, still no mention of Mike Hookem......

UKIP sources have told the BBC there was a UKIP meeting of MEPs at 10am today.

There was a "rumbustious argument" over whether Steven Woolfe had been talking to the Tory party.

A verbal conflict arose and he went outside with another MEP.

The other MEP took off his jacket and went outside the room and punches were exchanged.

It is believed that he banged his head against a structure, a window or a wall but he got up.

Steven Woolfe later collapsed, doctors were called and his wife was contacted.

Doctors said he had two "epileptic-like fits" and they believed there was bleeding on the brain.

He was taken to hospital where he has undergone further tests including a brain scan. He is conscious and his condition has improved in the last two hours.

Best wishes to him for a full and speedy recovery, the whys and wherefores really aren't important at the moment.

The Guardian said that Mr Woolfe instigated things and came off worse? Obviously no justification for what then happened, and I still wish him well, but what sort of people are these UKIP people?

Clearly we can only go off press reports, and until there's an investigation we shouldn't know who did what and for why.

But as it stands today these are this country's elected representatives and have to carry the flag on our behalf. To that end they have disgraced themselves and the flag, what will the Europeans think of us now?

If it were the BNP it would be adding evidence to the banning of that party.

On the bright side, they may find their EHIC cards come in handy. What a pity....

I've met Mr. Woolfe and, whilst I don't agree with his politics, he appeared to be a very pleasant gent. I wish him well.

What will the Europeans think of us now? What have they been thinking since the end of June and after Farage made his ridiculous speech?

They'll just think 'Brits abroad'.

Well; it is not trending topic on Twitter in the Netherlands. A brawl in your own party; weird enough. Remembers me of brawls seen in some Asian parlements.

What ridiculous speech?

It's not clear exactly what happened yesterday but if there was some sort of altercation then those involved are likely to face disciplinary action.

Anyway the most important thing is that Mr Woolfe appears to be fine now.

So having established that, discussion here can move on (or back) to other related matters including the general behaviour of leading lights in UKIP and the farce that is their monthly leadership competitions. Typical of a 'rabble without a cause'.

Every single speech he has ever done is ridiculous. So. Take your pick.

I realise I should have linked to the one I was referring to, but then remembered that he had many others where he stood up insulting others and acting like a t*-T so just search for Farage Speech on YouTube and take your pick.

As I alluded to previously, the same thing can be said about a few posters on here, so again take your pick:D

But this is a thread about UKIP, not individual members on here - unless they're UKIP MEPs too?

Give me an expample of a Farage speech that hasn't included something ridiculous, offensive, stupid or just downright lies that would be great. We could then take the debate forward

Could I just point out the very minor detail that Mr Farage had, as far as I'm aware, no involvement whatsoever in yesterdays incident so quite why he has been brought into this I'm not sure. Of course anybody is free to start a new thread about Mr Farage should they wish to do so.

That phrase about stones and greenhouses has never been more appropriate:roll:!

LAB: 25.3% (-17.7)

Seems to be really hitting UKIP in the polls.

LABOUR stormed to victory in the Rumworth by-election, with a huge majority of the vote.

Newly elected Councillor Shamim Abdullah secured 2,152 votes, with her nearest challengers UKIP on just 251.

From the 2011 census :

Rumworth ward in total is around 40% Indian, with some output areas of the borough coming close to 80%.
Who else was likely to be elected do you reckon ?

I suppose you could say the polar opposite about Hartlepool - a forgotten coastal town with 95% of the population born in England. Just 1.2% of the population is Muslim, Sikh, Buddhist, or Hindu.

Hartlepool is Britain's anus, neatly sandwiched between the pimply butt cheeks of Sunderland and Middlesbrough.

:D

(last bit wasn't serious...chill)

Labour also broke election rules (again) by sending out illegal leaflets just before the election.

Wonder why they don't vote Ukip??

Evidence please.

http://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news/bolton/14779997.___Rule_breaking____leaflet_down_to_printer_error/

BOLTON’S Labour party has been criticised for sending out thousands of campaign leaflets which break election rules. But Labour has insisted that a failure to include a necessary imprint — showing the name and address of the leaflet’s publisher — on thousands of leaflets was an honest printing error. The same offence was committed by Labour in 2009 on an election leaflet which was being used to promote Cllr Harkin, with the party again blaming a printing error.
Regarding the latest incident, Tory leader Cllr David Greenhalgh said: “Although to some people, I’m sure this will seem something and nothing, this is in fact serious.
“It is a legal requirement, and once again, despite their considerable experience, Labour feel they can flaunt the rules, knowing they will probably get a slap on the wrist from the Electoral Commission and carry on regardless. Not good enough.”

Thank you.

As someone who used to run elections for 'one of the big three' having a leaflet printed without an imprint is either incompetence or an unfortunate oversight.

Never a printing error.

Max Shanly, the top Labour Momentum fixer who featured in a Dispatches programme has today called Steven Woolfe a fascist and hoped he didn't recover from his injuries.

Nice party Labour.

Given they didn't actually run there last time, you can't argue whether they're higher or lower there.

No it isn't. It's completely irrelevant.

So all minorities vote one way do they? I remember you implying I was racist when I said that poor, white voters were much more likely to vote UKIP. Remember that poster you all called racist and got outraged about?

Hypocrisy and a complete lack of self-awareness seems to make the typical UKIP voter on here.
