Hi Guys,

Got an Alcohol & drug test coming up in the next few weeks.

What’s the recommended time frame not to consume alcohol before this?

Not a heavy drinker, bottle of wine with meal on a Friday/Saturday night and a few beers if I go out to watch the match.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Just don't drink the day before. As a general rule of thumb duscount the first hour(2 for women) and then you'll lose 1 unit of alcohol per hour after you start drinking.

The odd few glasses of wine/beer the day before ain't going to hurt but don't get smashed if your medscreen is early next day. Give yourself a good 12-15hrs.

A good rule of thumb is to allow 12 hours after ANY drink, and 24 hours after heavy drinking, before a medical, and a similar time before performing safety critical work.

Sorry to go a bit off topic. I was led to believe railway employees aren't allowed to consume alcohol 48 hours before starting work. Is this correct.

Thanks

Nope it's eight hours, quote, Railway Group Standards.

Unofficially, in the classroom sometime in the nineties, this was explained to us.....

Eight hours for a wee drinky.

Ten hours for a few drinkies.

Twelve hours or more for several drinkies, six shots and a barrel of grog.

For a pre-employment medical, as suggested stay off everything for 24-48hours, just for peace of mind.

No, this is not correct. You could have a bottle of wine with dinner at 6pm and be fine for work the next day on a late shift.

It's pretty simple to work out how long it's going to take for an amount of alcohol to completely leave your system, Google is your friend.

Your naturally going to be worried anyway on the day, take away any worry about the D&A test by giving it 2 or 3 days.
May help your blood pressure results if nothing else! ;)

We have a company policy of no alcohol to be consumed with in 12 hours of booking on duty.

If it's for a job you really want why even risk it. Give it a week at least off the beers. I never even used mouthwash, certain deodorants etc before mine because in no way did I want to fail. Stay away from anything with poppy's ends on it too they confuse the tests. Most people I work with won't drink the day before a shift, late or early, maybe over cautious but you can be random tested at anytime and why risk it.

That's a bit obsessive! If you tell them you ain't had a drink for a week they're going to wonder what else you're not telling them, and they might dig a bit deeper than what they would otherwise have done.

Not really - they dont ask anyway but its perfectly normal for people not to have a drink for a week if not longer. Remember not everyone drinks on weekdays and friday night after work may be the only time they have a drink

I think the breathalyser test is just to catch out those that have alcohol dependencies and cant function without a drink with their cornflakes.

Out of curiosity what type of pre employment test do they conduct. I've heard that they test your hair for everything and was just wondering
