I was thinking this thread could be stuck for references sake.

But as was said in the post you quoted, if people struggle to find an abbreviation, their answer is to then visit this thread and trawl through multiple pages of abbreviations?

Why can't people just state what the abbreviation is when posting it?

The Mods have on more than one occasion pointed out that when a location is mentioned in a thread the full name should be shown for the first post as not everybody is familiar with these.

I'm confused then.

By all means have a thread such as this to pool the abbreviations, but not as a source to direct people to, as has been suggested.

Not to mention the commonly misused BNS for Birmingham New Street (BNS is Barnes) and BTM for Bristol Temple Meads (there is no BTM) and so forth.

Are these abbreviations for conformity on this site or are they, for want of a better term, industry standards. Because I wonder who decided that c2c* was too long and needed an abbreviation. CC would be much better used for Cross Country, leaving X always Express (HX & GX) Crossrail should, of course, be EL - Elisabeth Line.

Of course X is commonly used as an abbreviation for 'cross' and not just on the railway.
