Llandudno Jnc - Bath Spa Sunday

I have to travel Llandudno Jnc to Bath Spa on Sunday 2nd Oct to arrive no later than 22:30 for a bus connection. I would prefer to leave mid afternoon and build in some contingency time. Due to the Severn Tunnel work the Marches line route either means an early departure or paying a high price. I have a Senior Railcard. I am thinking of a split at Birmingham NS. The Llandudno to Birmingham NS is an any time ticket but I have to advance Birmingham to Bath. My concern is that that the National Rail site journey suggestions mainly involve changes at Chester and Crewe with connection times as short as 5 mins and 10 mins. Any advice please?

I was waiting for someone more knowledgeable to reply, but as no-one has, my suggestion is to check out the raileasy trainsplit website, and under Advanced put in a minimum connection time you can manage.

I tried it out for your journey and put 15 minutes, and some interesting results came up, including one that is First Class all the way (four changes unfortunately) for less than £60. It gets you to Bath Spa just before 20:00, but you could kill time in a pub or have a meal if that's too early for your onward journey.

The Llandudno to Birmingham NS is an any time ticket but I have to advance Birmingham to Bath.

By this, do you mean that you already hold an Anytime ticket for Llandudno to Birmingham?

I have not bought any tickets yet. Just took Birmingham as a split as a guess.

It will be a single journey.

An Anytime Single, with a senior railcard discount, limited to trains "via Hereford" (which in reality means via Hereford and Newport and the rail replacement bus from Newport to Bristol) is £35.20 for Llandudno Junction to Bath.

So if you search for Llandudno Junction to Bath, and specify "via Hereford", there are a number of journey opportunities, some with reasonable interchange times. And the anytime ticket gives you flexibility.

This price compares with a via Hereford Advance for £23.10 on the 0935 arriving 1626 or for £27.10 on the 1526 arriving 2137.

I was using the Virgin Trains East Coast site, simply asking for Llandudno Junction to Bath without any splitting, and opting for routes "via Hereford", but "via Hereford" Advances on the 1526 would now appear to have sold out: the only ones left are on the 0935 or 1725 (but the latter would get you in far too late).

Or, using National Rail Enquiries, and opting for "via Hereford" and for interchange times increased by 30 minutes, I am offered a £27.05 Advance on the 1122 Llandudno Junction to Newport train, with an arrival time at Bath of 1750.

Or using VTEC, opting for "via Hereford", clicking on Timetables Only, then clicking on Text Only Version, then opting for increased interchange times when the option appears, I get that £27.05 ticket on the 1122 with an arrival time at Bath of 1726.
