The interior looks decent even if using original seats, appearing to be in original window-aligned layout. Though I do wish TOCs would specify more colourful carpets - grey tend to show up brown mud very quickly - or even consider "featured" vinyl e.g. wood effect which both looks welcoming and is very easy to clean.

The livery? Too much white.

I like the idea of that livery, the deep blue and white go well together, but the colourful "n" logos appear a little out of place. Looks like they've made a mess of the cab window, also.

The font and the bubbles look like something aimed at a primary school kids and doesn't really go with the sober colour scheme.

I much prefer the northern electrics scheme applied to the 319s.

I like the livery and the refurbishment, I'm looking forward to seeing it in person.

Thanks for sharing, Simon.

'Simple but smart' would be my view so far on the interior form the photos. Any news on wifi or sockets?

I like the principle of the livery and think it's quite smart; definitely a huge improvement on Northern Rail, though maybe some kind of thin horizonal stripe somewhere along the bodyside may have added interest. The bubbles look dreadful though - they really cheapen the look of the unit. I have to agree about the 'n' too, it just doesn't look smart.

That's really nice; the seats, the walls, the exterior... everything. They also have a PIS as well, LCD screen?

I must be the only one who likes the bubbles and the "n's", but if they are so unlucky, expect them to be in a crash soon, 13 first! :lol:

Be interesting to see how they tweak the livery for units with 2/3rd doors, as they appear to be the same colour as the base finish on the 158

Those coloured "bubbles" look a bit toy-town... surprised they've not replaced the seats, but hopefully that means the centre car still has the extra padding from TPE days!

It'll be the 'Coast Ghost' when it starts working along the Yorkshire and Cumbrian coasts

Has just been given an internal refresh as opposed to a full makeover?

From what I can gather (from what's been posted on here), the unit has been made post-2020 compliant (toilet mods, door buttons, PIS, etc.) and had seats reupholstered and cushions replaced. The Northern Connect requirements which all Northern 158s are due require fitting of WiFi which I assume has been fitted, as one of the 158/9s has already been done.

The Connect specifications also require legacy stock to be comparable to new stock. Given the recent "New Seats Roadshow", hopefully at some point the refurbishment will be finished with new seats... as long as they're not exhibit B!

It's actually a requirement for all stock to have a 'like new' interior. However, it seems 'like new' doesn't have to include new seats. The extra requirements for Northern Connect are to be done to all 158s include things like USB charging points, a certain number of table bays with fold down tables at most of the other seats and baby changing facilities. They also have to have reliable air conditioning - I wonder whether Arriva will properly meet that requirement for the 158s?

Based on my experiences in warm weather this summer, the air-conditioning is the least of their worries as it has generally been pretty reliable.

For me "like new" would require new seating, but I suppose it is open to interpretation!

For reference: *Note removed some specification numbers etc

36. Fleet Refurbishment
36.1 The Franchisee shall, as proposed in its response to the Invitation to Tender, refurbish the interiors of 64 Class 333 vehicles, 162 Class 150 vehicles, 14 Class 155 vehicles, 114 Class 158 vehicles, 48 Class 170 vehicles, 128 Class 319 vehicles and 94 Class 156 vehicles to the following specification:
(a) recovering of all seats and the replacement of all seat cushions;
(b) new floor coverings throughout;
(c) repainting of all interior panels;
(d) powder coating of all grab poles and rails;
(e) a clean compliant with the Deep Clean Specification;
(f) full exterior repaint (Class 319s units repainted into Northern Electrics livery in 2015 or 2016 to be completed by 31 March 2023);
(g) fitting of Wi-Fi compliant with at least the Minimum Wi-Fi Service Requirements;
(h) fitting of at least one PRM compliant toilet with baby-change facility per multiple
unit;
(i) fitting of LED lighting,
(j) fitting of a passenger information system
(k) fitting of CCTV
(l) fitted with a driver advisory system to advise the driver on the most economical
method of driving consistent with good timekeeping;
(m) fitted with forward facing CCTV;
(n) fitted to be “ERTMS-ready” so that when ETCS equipment needs to be installed
in accordance with the Network Rail programme it can be done without needing
intrusive works including because necessary wiring is in place and space for the
equipment has been kept free as part of the refurbishment works.

36.2 In addition to the works specified in paragraph 36.1:
(a) 16 Class 333 units shall have two vehicles modified in a “metro style”
configuration (32 vehicles in total) to increase passenger carrying capacity per
unit by at least 19%;
(b) all Class 158 units will be refurbished to a standard that meets the Rolling Stock
Quality Requirements and be fitted with remote condition monitoring equipment;
(c) 24 class 150 two car units will be reformed into 16 three car units with the toilet
removed from each centre car; and
(d) each Class 319 and Class 333 unit shall be fitted with pantograph monitoring
CCTV.

From that "as new" appears just to be replacing cushions and re-covering, although elsewhere they do detail a change in seating capacity for some units, which would necessitate a change in seating.

Majority of those works require complete strip out though, you cant just work around the seats. So even if its same frames going back in when taken with the other works its a complete refurbishment.

It's the 158s that are getting additional seats but it sounds like those will be inserted in the area currently occupied by the second toilet so they won't necessarily be the same type of seating as the rest of the train even if all the seats are replaced.

Don't tell me they're taking away a toilet on the 158's ? Loony tunes if they are.

To me I would have read that as any ex-BR stock which haven't had the seats replaced must have the seats replaced and other stock needs to be looked at on a case by case basis. For instance, with the ex-FNW 150s should they be switched to 2+2 seating and with the 156s are the seats in good enough condition to last another 9 years?
