Looks nothing like a write-off. Good job by all.

What does a write-off look like?

This unit's problem was that it got wet - very wet!
Externally it didn't look too bad when it went to Brodies

Do you mean that you like the new paint and vinyls? - like they've got on a lot of other 156s (and other units)

Looks like they are going all out Anglian by painting yellow higher up the face of the unit, compared to before.

Sorry, what do you mean by all out Anglian?

And how many inches (if any) is the yellow on the front higher than other Saltire liveried units?

Presumably the comment was simply saying that a good job has been done as the unit looks more or less brand new - if you didn't know its past, you'd never guess that it had suffered flood damage so bad that it had been written off and possibly could have gone to the scrapyard.

Even a unit that's been standing in water rather than had a collision could have visible external damage from, for example, debris floating on the water coming into contact with the bodywork, as well as having a watermark down the side. I didn't see a close-up picture of the unit after it was recovered so I don't know, but it's possible. :)

What a miserable post.

I join with those on here to congratulate everyone that worked to get this unit rebuilt and back in service. Fortunately, Brian won't have to ride on it.

Everyone in this forum won't have to ride in it (not just me) - are you saying that I'll be dead by the time it's in trafffic!

I too am pleased it's been overhauled/refurbished and would love to ride on it as with any overhauled/refurbished unit

Apologies, I should of specified.

Greater Anglia's 156, after being repainted, had the yellow fronts painted slightly higher than what it was before (the first instance of this for any 156) - giving a slightly different look compared to other 156s. Scotrail Saltire units didn't receive higher yellow heads, which is why this unit is unique. I'm unsure of the dimensions, but it is noticeable (look at the paint just above the interconnecting gangway)

See below :)

Will be interesting to see interior photos of the rebuilt unit (presmably they gutted the inside to the bare body work and chucked out the contents of the interior no matter if water damaged or not)

Because if you're going to strip the unit back to the frame, you might as well install everything new rather than penny pinch. Reusing a few components doesn't save that much in the grand scheme and means that you've got old components.

Think of it less as repairing water damage, and more as an unscheduled refurbishment.

Just to disappoint you they have kept the original seats fitted. new Saltire coverings though. new LED lighting tubes and new toilet that meets the new regulations along with a CET tank somehow fitted underneath. It was stripped back to a bare body shell and all corrosion repaired. It's essentially brand new inside apart from the seat frames.

Everything below sole bar level has been renewed or refurbished.

It is now moving under its own power and is expected to be back in service within the next 5 to 10 days if all goes well with final testing.

There's no orange stripe on 478 yet though.

Just look at the problems the 15x classes have had, sagging bodies for 153s and corrosion for another 15x class.

Saggy body?

The 153 was built by British Leyland and the 156 was built by Metro-Cammell.

It's a bit like Bake-Off. A contestant's cake versus a Mary Berry cake - you can be pretty sure that which won't have a soggy bottom.

All they had to do was add air-conditioning and reglaze with non-opening windows and it would have been one of the best units on the network.

Great to see this returning to service. Its also a testament to the great work which can be done by Brodies.

Did we come to a conclusion on who this unit is now owned by?

Thanks,
Ross

I think it's probably fair to say we'll be seeing a lot more of this unit over many coming decades. Let's face it, of you were choosing a 156 for preservation it's clear which one would be top of the list!

Yeah, I was thinking that actually. Its probably as good as new, literally.

Thanks,
Ross

What is the difference between the older generation and this new one?
The licence for the radio frequencies is expiring which necessitated replacing the equipment. I'm not sure what the other technical differences are.

I believe that will have been 156509 which has recently been refurbished. 478 is still at Brodies.
