If you don't feel like spending 90 minutes going via Harrogate, and £3.00 Northern Advance fares aren't your thing, give Coastliner buses a try, it's half the price of the train for a return and they are quicker than travelling via Harrogate.
Otherwise, you're going to need a loophole to make the journey cheaper, and that won't be publicly posted on the forum, as the Train Operating Companies will close it down.

The price via HGT is £11.70 Off Peak v £13.10 (and £15.00 Anytime vs £16.80). The saving is marginal but if time is more important than money I suppose it may add up.
