That's undeniably true. But I would assume the point sarahj was making was that if you're reading the internal staff emails then you really, really, really should already know that.

From the context I would assume that it is the required script for notifying prospective passengers.

I would have thought that the average punter would know what the points were but having seen some daytime TV quiz shows since retirement my opinion of the ignorance of the Great British Public has reached a new low.

Sometimes the programme makers get it wrong. There was once a question on The Weakest Link that went something like: "What is the name for a mode of transport that runs on a single track?" They were looking for the answer "monorail" but by saying "track" when they really meant to say "rail", an ordinary train would have been a perfectly correct answer.

Another one was the QI 'fact' that no electric current flows in the running rails of a railway line.

I presume this is something to do with Network Rail's "delays explained" page on their website - I often see TOC messages being sent out on Tyrell at work now with "Delays explained..." and then a link to one of these pages:

Speaking as someone who has accidentally bridged an IRJ (by grasping both rails) in HVI TC territory, I can confirm that this assertion is shockingly wrong.

That's the American term, is it not?

The days are long past when many children had a train set which included points to create sidings and loops when they extended it.
