I think it would be a great idea for the second and fourth carriages on Merseyrail trains to be made 1st class. The prices could be raised to about 8 pound for a day ticket for all zones and prices for other tickets raised by a corresponding proportion. This would hopefully keep bad characters out of the way of nice people. It would also fund the recruitment of extra action squads to deal with naughty passengers.
Stiffer collars and peaked caps for station and train staff could also be funded this way. As well as elocution lessons and shoe polish for guards. I think also it might be worth considering replacing coal fires in the waiting rooms. The waiting room at Hall Road screams for a coal fire. Bicycles to be banned outright.
Eventually the class 507/8 must be replaced by a class of train featuring a guard van where bicycles could be stored, along with screaming bin lids. On this new train the seats will have gaps. So that little treasure behind, head butting his head rest won't bother newspaper reading commuter.
The new livery colour must be either blue and grey again or blue.
Announcements pander to stupidity and ought to be abolished except in the event of unusual or catastrophic occurrences.
This class of train, perhaps called class 1000 will be an EMU and built in the UK.

What if you rely on announcements due to visual impairments?

If I'm honest, it all seems a bit Nazi.

I particularly like the idea of a screaming bin lid - whatever one of those is! :D

Rhyming slang. :p.
On the subject of announcements, I mean the stupid things. Stations etc are understandable. I'd replace Julie Berry with Gordon Honeycomb.

Excellent ideas that can be rolled out beyond Merseyside in time. I favour a return of third class too to ensure that everybody can ride on a train to get to a job or to their holidays in Southport.

Coal fires and peaked caps? Has the opening post travelled through time from the 1930s to be with us today? ;)

With that being said, there's few sights more welcoming than that of a traditional roaring coal fire upon entering a pub, but I rather think that the modern day TOCs have more pressing concerns to attend to at their managed stations!

What is a screaming bin lid?
Aren't they a band? :p

I don't think that the TOPS system, convoluted as it already is, will be much improved by an EMU class 1000! ;)

Parts of your posting saw me metaphorically transported back to my early days of rail travel in the 1950s.

I wonder if you have ever seen any Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway signs that make reference to..."No idlers"..:D

Trains are a social form of travel. These forums have members who will favour a "take it or leave it" ideology.

Your chances of swaying either party that its a good idea or actually changing anything are slim.

But, I think its a great idea. We should separate and diversify riff raff from respectable gentlemen like yourself.

This must be a troll thread, unless of course you're bonkers
Anyone remotely familiar with the Merseyrail network would agree that a First Class section would be completely unneccessary, unenforceable and in no way different to standard class. Nobody would pay for it.

That first post suggests the poor are worse people than the snobs, that's not the case at all. All people should be Standard Class, if they don't like poor people (the majority), they are the undesirable ones.

When I choose to travel first class (which is only when I can find a good, reasonably priced first advance) it's not to 'get away from the poor people', it's for the nice comfy seats, free cup of tea/meal, etc.

N.B. I do agree that first class on Merseyrail would completely and utterly pointless.

Aye, and the only people ever in it are staff or scroungers!

In Hamburg it traditionally had a reasonable number of season ticket holders who had first class season tickets in order to use the Schnellbus express/direct bus services.

While the Hamburg S-Bahn has abandoned 1st some years ago, these buses remain classed as 1st to control demand for them.

Not so much that poor people are worse but that the Scallies often encountered might just be put off first class by the fact that there is more space and cheaper tickets available in third. Most people would probably ride third. First may then become a sanctuary of quiet.

Failing that, action squads can deal with misbehaviour.

If you have that much issue with your fellow passengers on Merseyrail, just take a cab.

It's clear from your posts that you haven't got a clue what you're talking about or you're living in a fantasy world. There is already a zero-tolerance attitude towards misbehaviour on Merseyrail and as a result there is very little trouble.

Alcohol is forbidden throughout the network and it's rarely seen; even your so-called "Scallies" don't tend to get drunk on the train. Yeah, you'll have a few on Friday/Saturday nights but there are extra staff around to deal with these.

Given the presence of Byelaw Enforcement Officers or Rail Response teams on a frequent basis there's no need for your "action squads". Capacity is already sufficient on the vast majority of services so there's no need to bugger about adding second or third class to any unit.

Fares are already affordable and competitive to the bus, where applicable. Any reduction in fares would simply be revenue negative.

I'm pretty sure this is meant to be a fantasy thread! :D

Though Mr Honeycombe's death in October 2015 might be a slight impediment to this otherwise excellent suggestion.

Let's have toilets, buffet car and sleeper car too. Oh and steam specials running round the loop on weekends and bank holidays.

The scallies won't be bothered about first class they'll use that too as they'll have more room.

Ditto. On the odd occasion I've ever gone first class, the company has been far less convivial. In standard you get a more interesting mix, first seems to be full of business arseholes bellowing into their phones or loudly sharing their inflated sense of self worth with their colleagues on the train. The company actively puts me off traveling first class.

Firstly, I made no mention of alcohol consumption whatsoever. As for the by law enforcement teams, I have seen their effectiveness. Rather, their lack thereof. Fining a woman for having the incorrect ticket and then allowing a group of noisy yobs to ride with no tickets. Because said yobs told the enforcement people to eff off. Other times I've seen their ineffectual attempts to do their jobs. No doubt they are of great help but I think it could be improved upon somewhat. I use these trains daily and know exactly what I'm talking about. To raise the issue of trouble makers is not to write off all fellow passengers or even a great number of them.

Capacity is not the issue with adding first class. The second and fourth carriages already exist. Changing them to first class is not intended to add capacity. It's seems you are not seeing what I'm driving at.

I also talked of raising fares. Not reducing them. So I've no idea where you got that from. If it must be fantasy to live in a more civilised world then alright. Why shouldn't a fellow be able to imagine such things? Are we to live as dullards in a world of miserable drudgery?

I think that this is a tongue in cheek thread which has served it's purpose now, so I'm closing it.
