Evening folks,

I am planning to do the ELR's Diesel gala and nightrider thing in March. Just wondering, does anybody know what they are like, as I know only vague details of them? If anybody also has any info on what the upcoming event will hold, that will be brilliant.

Cheers guys. :D

Usually, they're very funny and involve copious amount of alcohol. Traction can vary - last year it was 50015 which got all the EE lads going...then it failed and they were greeted by the awful site of a 47 coming round the bend into Ramsbottom! All that could be heard were anti-47 obscenities!<D

Sounds brilliant! I have only ever done a Spa Valley diesel gala, so I dont really know what the big time ones are like. I am really looking forward to it though :)

Ah, I'm not fussed about the Night traction. 37's will be nice, but anything will do. That way, I dont have to go all the way back to Kent that night lol

Any idea what will be running during the gala?

The March event is normally a home fleet affair, this years event featured 24054, 33109, 37109, 40135, 47402, 50015 & 55022 (May have been something else but can't remember if there was, think there was also a swap which meant the 47 was only out one day and one of the others only out the other). So Bassically depends what they have available as some locos will probably still be winterised so the best bet traction wise will be those with heat nthat have been working over the winter, i.e. steam heat fitted 24 & 40 and ETS locos such as the 33, 47, 50 & 55.

Never done one of these myself, but for the same reason as ekr123, I'd like to do it to avoid having to trek all the way home the same day. Plus trains right through the night sounds appealing to me, although I'll be sitting down for most of the night, it'll be too cold to bellow!

Hopefully there's something EE on one end and Sulzer on the end to keep both camps happy.

If you do go ekr123, let us know so there's a chance of a mini-meet. Would be nice to have some company all night.

Well, I am in talks with some other people on here about it. Wont mention any names, as they may complain as they havnt confirmed yet. Although a chance to meet the group, and a right laugh through the night will be excellent.

That thing under the control of the Lancs lads is pure and utter hell!

Are you saying its not driven well enough at the SVR then? A certain ELR driver who has been mentioned on here also drives at the valley where the normal coaching rakes comprise of 7 or 8 viechles compared to 4 on a running day at the Lancs! Then again the thing is an absoulte monster whether it be in Rammy tunnels or Foley Park <D

Hellfire no matter where it is, but on the Lancs its full power standing start, on the Valley it's notches. To me anyway, what would I know ;)

Depends who is driving really. Remember at last Octobers gala coming back from Bewdley on its last trip it was just getting dark, almost came to a stand under the footbridge outside of Kiddy before being blocked, cue mass flaming!

By the way slightly more on topic I have just had a quick browse of the Lancs site and see that they are advertising a diesel theme day on Jan 10th, wonder what that will feature then?!

Remember, I'm generally not a preserved-stuff crank, but I do make the occasional exception. 37906 is on a long, long list of stuff that needs to be done in 2009.

Aye, organising the meet at the end of January should be satisfactory. Still time to sort APs/mega-massive coach moves out then.

Yeah. I'm getting Advanced tickets from Dover to Manchester, which will work out as something like £8. January seems suitable for the organisation.

How does this nightrider thing work, and is it only done at the elr?

I thought that there would be issues regarding sound pollution. I mean the sound of a 37 roaring through Ramsbotton at 2am would sureley not impress the locals!

There must also issues surrounding drunken yobs at Bury St station staggering and causing problems after a heavy and subjective night out. Its bad enough getting a regular train service at the early hours.

Well, from what I have gathered, I think they put the quieter locos on at night, such as the Deltic or a 50. I wouldnt know anything else, I'm afraid. Maybe '37412' can enlighten the subject. He has a good knowledge of the ELR.

Do I?

Yes the the event runs all night, think the rake they used this year was all compo's but not 100% sure. Just depends whats available and with heat as too what they put out I think, don't know what they do about noise but the 50 worked most of the night this year and that thing ain't quiet at full power. The last event just gone a local cubs/scouts group turned up for the overnight part just as we were leaving!

Middle of the night in March, sounds a bit cold to me! Anyway will be there depending upon what traction they use.
