There's only one service per day which runs fast to Newcastle each way

There's one an hour that runs fast to York, and you'd be surprised how many people do the commute. It's less than two hours to Kings Cross from York.

Somehow that doesn't surprise me.

The article does say "commuters", so I assumed that it is the typical Newcastle service which stops at Peterborough, Newark...etc to name a few. So I assumed that the many commuters are likely bound for places like Peterborough and Newark, places with cheap house prices.
To many journalists, all railway passengers are commuters. They don't understand the meaning of the word.

I meant first stop Newcastle. :)

But I agree that many people commute from York to London daily.

It's possible. I mean, there must be at least some people on the train who want to visit Newcastle.

Corbyn does travel reguarly by train in standard class. He did when he travelled to Durham for the miners gala.

Roberta Blackman-Woods, Durham's Labour MP however travelled in first!

A quick look at the IPSA rules for MP's expenses (easily found on the web) shows that an MP' s expenses for train travel to their constituency are limited to the price of an Anytime Standard Return. So the MP for Durham was not milking it when she travelled First class. MPs get a fair whack as a salary, and JC gets even more as Leader of the Opposition. So if Roberta was paying her way in First Class, then she was relieving the pressure on the downtrodden working class in Standard, while the people's hero was adding to the crush in solidarity with them. I doubt if they were at all grateful.

Since the MPs expenses scandal train travel has been standard class only, I think they can offer to pay the difference to travel first class but Parliament will only pay for standard class in full.

I know Nick Winterton wasn't happy about traveling standard class because "totally different type of people" travel in standard class to him (he genuinely said that).

I know with the BBC all talent is required to travel standard class unless its written into their contract but most tickets are booked by production managers who just go onto thetrainline and pay whatever fare comes up and I reckon parliament is the same so there is a lot of waste and over expenditure in public sector travel.

Why should people work whilst travelling. I strongly disagree. Relax and then be relaxed and ready to go when you arrive,

I'm afraid not all jobs are fixed hours. Working on the train can be more efficient - if it's substituted for time in the office or working at home.

He must have plenty to do, and every spare hour must surely be used productively. As it stands (or sits!) it just looks like he wasted a good proportion of a working day.
If it got him an article like this, he did use the time pretty productively. Especially if the story was carried by any other papers.

Trying to research what the government is doing would be a bit of a waste of time as the government doesn't seem to know itself now.

It's not unusual on the East Coast to find First Class seats cheaper than Standard, so it's quite possible she would have been spending less than him anyway!

"Corbyn in show of solidarity with Sinn Féin terror chums by refusing to take seat"

Indeed, he is a loathsome cretin. The man is nothing more than a left wing protester, not a leader in anyway shape or form and hopefully will back where he belongs next month.

Indeed. I did ask earlier in the thread what day it was - but it remains unclear.

If this was Sunday, when there was chaos on the line due to the vulnerable person planning self-harm on the RBB...

Then it is utterly sick and twisted that Guardian and Labour Party are using it for political gain.

I wouldn't be too suprised. The best place for that rag would be out of the nearest droplight at 125 mph.

Anyway continue...

I once sat opposite the local Tory MP for my local area on a service to Leeds. They did ask me where the guard was, how come there were no ticket machines on the platform and as to why there were only two coaches for the xx.27 service to Leeds.

My replies to all of them were, the guards Advantix is broken and so he won't be able to sell any tickets, Northern won't be installing any machines as apparenty they think that there isn't enough people who use Brighouse to warrent a machine despite it having slightly higher figures than Sowerby Bridge and that there seriously needs to be some investment as the Regional Railways era rolling stock cannot go on forever.

Funnily enough Brighouse along with Sowerby Bridge (I believe that Mythomroyd too) are getting staffed from 2018.

Jeremy Corbyn had a seat on a train journey during which he sat on the ground for a video attacking the quality of Britain’s rail services, new CCTV footage obtained by The Telegraph shows.

The Labour leader is seen passing empty seats before filming a video in which he criticised the “completely rampacked” service while sitting on the floor between carriages.

I wondered if it was simply that the seats were reserved, but on twitter, Richard Clinnick said
Virgin says CCTV footage taken on 11/8 shows @jeremycorbyn and team walked past empty, unreserved seats in coach H before sitting on floor.

https://twitter.com/Clinnick1/status/768067457437360128

EDIT: Virgin have now released an extraordinary statement calling Corbyn a liar.

https://www.virgintrains.co.uk/about/media-room/#/pressreleases/virgin-trains-clarifies-labour-leaders-claim-of-ram-packed-service-1530005

They say that Corbyn walked past empty seats in coach H, filmed it and then walked back to coach H and sat in an empty seat. Images are available as well if you click the "Images and video" at the top.

Seats were available on the train in which Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn was filmed sitting on the floor, Virgin Trains has found.

Film footage released to the media showed Mr Corbyn sitting on the floor of a three-hour Virgin Trains service from London to Newcastle claiming it was “ram-packed”.

This is too late though. This response should have been published the day after, not a week after.

So how is that "self funding" Someone has to pay for the services. Does the railway have another source of income outside ticketing ?

Yes. Subsidy.

Yes. Ancillary income from rents.

Is this Corbyn's version of Hillary Clinton being 'under fire' in Bosnia?

Well done Corbyn. Serves him right, if you want to improve your public image then don't lie to the media!

Perhaps the thread title should be changed to take this recent development into account!

Now we know communists can't be trusted. Who knew!

When even the (ex) PM told you to go because every Government needs a strong opposition, it beggars belief that this man is still hanging on.

I want to know who thought this was a sensible idea personally! It certainly is interesting to see that Virgin have properly gone for the jugular here, they've even got Branson to Tweet about it.

Seen another of the shots from a different camera, clearly shows unreserved non ticketed seating hes walking past though some of the seats have single occupants.

Presumably not the shot the media is using because it shows his back not his face.

CCTV footgage obtained by The Telegraph

You mean "stills released by Virgin Trains East Coast", lads.

As for Virgin's pathetic press release, two things we've learned:

1. You're free to sit in reserved seats, so long as they appear empty, even if the train hasn't left yet.

2.
nfortunately we can’t do anything about...fares regulation, which could spread demand much more effectively if it was less of a blunt instrument. We have discussed regulation with the Government at various points over the last two decades and we’d be delighted to work with Ministers if they were interested in reviewing the fares structure for long distance services, with the aim of reducing the overcrowding that can sometimes occur.

"if only those pesky politicians would let us increase fares as much as we wanted to, there wouldn't be any overcrowding (because the plebs would be on the coach".

Finally, I do hope they got consent before they published photos of the child and father in coach H. Even with the (badly) pixellated faces they are identifiable. But then why bother about looking after the privacy of fare-paying passengers when the SNP-funding homophobe has a point to score, eh?

Who are they then? I certainly can't work it out!

The CCTV was taken at 1111 (1108 according to the caption) so he will have been on the 1100 which left on time so the train had certainly left when he walked past them.

I think that the point of that was that the train wasn't 'ram-packed', like Corbyn suggested it was.

oh dear, oh dear oh dear - this is clearly an outrageous plot by the disgusting MSM to discredit Jeremy Corbyn due to the fact that he is a normal bloke and a threat to the establishment. Do you not understand you are all simply pandering to the evil right wing MSM by circulating this stuff?

We were ahead in the polls before the Blaritie coup

The CCTV was taken at 1137 so he will have either been on the 1100 or the 1130 both of which left on time so the train had certainly left when he walked past them.

It was the 1100, and apparently they walked past the seats in coach H before departure, before returning to coach H about 45 minutes later, after staff had helped them find a seat.

Interesting how they don't use the CCTV on Corbyn's way up the train. I wonder why that might be.

Not that Brian Souter, a SNP-funding homophobe, would have a vested interest in attacking Corbyn now, would he...

Who are they then? I certainly can't work it out!

Are you trying to argue it's fine for VTEC to show high-res images of young children in order to score cheap political points?

You've got to love the gay-basher and the tax-dodger efficient businessman. It took them over a week to dig this rubbish out. They must be extraordinarily thin-skinned.

You know my opinion on Corbyn. But in a contest between Corbyn and Souter, there's only one winner.

Corbyn was the one trying to score political points. This serves him right.

Come on - he staged the whole charade and has been caught out. It simply shows his lack of political nous and understanding of how to spin a PR opportunity - surely a necessary evil for a serious politician

I don't see the point of getting up in arms about it. As I said the child and father don't appear to be particularly identifiable to me. Surely it's not that much different to Google Street view?

On that, at least, we can agree!

Erm - Labour (who I assume you mean by 'we' but you're actually speaking for yourself) hasn't been consistently ahead in the polls since sometime 2015.

There have been occasional polls when they've been ahead, only a couple of times since January - and it's never been a trend.

Google will take your face out if it is identifiable. They won't blow it up and send it out in a press release to every paper in the country.

I think it just shows a certain disregard to the privacy of passengers, and it sums up the attitude that Virgin and Stagecoach have to their customers. I'd be spitting if that was me and my daughter in that image.

As an aside, I'm also curious how Virgin Trains West Coast Limited ended up releasing a press release with images from an East Coast Main Line Company train. That's a very interesting take on reasonable use of personally identifiable data...

VTEC aren't trying to make a cheap political point. Corbyn tried to do that when he lied. Corbyn did lie. It is an incontrovertible fact supported by photographic evidence. All politicians do it, and all politicians get caught doing it regardless of party affiliation, so I fail to see why you are so needlessly outraged or surprised in this particular case.

Virgin simply set the record straight, as they are perfectly entitled to do when a senior and prolific national personality willfully and culpably misleads the public at large about the services you provide. There is no conspiracy, there is no corporate involvement in a coup. The simplest way to avoid negative media coverage in this story would have been to simply be truthful.

Why couldn't he have simply said "I've spent 10 minutes trying to find a seat on this train. Staff have been excellent in assisting me, but all this overcrowding makes their jobs difficult and highlights the need for more trains. I've been lucky today, but many commuters across this country are not." Why did he have to spend several minutes walking through the train to find a spot by the door to make a video and lie to the British. All politicians have been caught doing , and quite frankly Corbyn should have known better.

And no, it is not possible to identify any of the member of the public in the stills which VTEC. Any claim to the contrary is deliberately misleading. Furthermore, it is wholly incorrect to claim the images posted are "high resolution".

And, just like Google, the faces of all the members of the public have been pixelated to such an extent it is not possible to personally identify those individuals. Any claims that a person other than Jerermy Corbyn in the stills is personally identifiable is wholly and completely false.
