Travel to Tarnow (Poland)

I did ask for some advice a while back as I was planning on doing a tour of Switzerland and Germany on the train next year, and received some excellent advice, but I am thinking of putting that on hold now as I have been invited to stay at a friends for a week or so. The friend is a Polish lad who used to work with me but he has now returned to Poland but we keep in touch via social media and he had invited me over there. He lives in a town called Tarnow.

As I am unable to fly (due to having part of my skull removed, during treatment for a brain tumour a few years back) I was maybe thinking of doing this trip on the train.

I have looked into it myself but not really getting far as some of the websites are quite hard to understand and navigate so I was just wondering if any of you seasoned European travellers out there had any advice regarding the best route to take, cheapest fare, best site to buy tickets from etc.

Obviously no problem getting to the Eurostar Terminal in London but advice from there onwards would be very welcome.

You can get to Berlin or Dresden with a London Spezial ticket from www.bahn.de. You'll then need to travel onwards from one of those to Krakow in Poland and then finally Tarnow. You'll be able to buy tickets from Germany to somewhere in Poland with www.bahn.de but the final bit would be from www.pkp.pl. Train tickets in Poland are pretty cheap

Quickest, and most comfortable way, if not the most direct or cheapest, looks to be to travel via London and Warsaw- get there on EN447 from Koln( Eurostar and Thalys) or EN453 from Paris then jump on an EIC Tarnow train or change at Krakow. Changing at Poznan is more direct, but the trains from there to Krakow are rather slow....
Looked at Ferry Hull to Rotterdam but it takes much longer going that way around.

Whichever way, it's a hell of a trip overland! I'd be tempted to make a big circle of it and travel back via Ostrava and Wien or Prague....

PS- if you want to check your options, use the Bahn.de website- that'll give you times from Grimsby to anywhere in Europe

If you don't already know about it, have a look at http://www.seat61.com/Poland.htm.

If you want to use the Cologne-Warsaw night train, make sure you go before December, as sadly it's due to be withdrawn then.

There is - ahem - a direct London Victoria - Krakow coach...
