I think that the issue re the 402 is that the boundary between the GLC area and Sevenoaks Borough Council is at Knockholt, and therefore paper Travelcards are valid up to this boundary; I assume that all 'approved' routes within the GLC area should accept paper Travelcards - does the 477 accept them up to the GLC boundary? I also assume that Oysters are not valid since the service is not a TfL tendered service and therefore Arriva do not need to fit ticket machines capable of reading them / deducting journeys from them (and at what rate?).

TfL used to publish a document showing ticket acceptance on non TfL services but it's not on their website any more. There isn't even any info in their Staff Ticketing Handbooks. Having dug around for a while there is a reference to the 402 and 477 ticketing in the TfL Conditions of Carriage which date from May 2016.

In summary you can use Bus and Tram Passes, Day Travelcards, Travelcard seasons on the 402 and 477. Pay as you Go is not valid. The Freedom Pass, ENCTS, Veterans Oyster and 60+ Oyster are also valid. The Cs of C refer to Table A3 which I've pasted below.

A3 The other local bus services within Greater London are:
402 between Bromley North Station and Knockholt Pound, Three Horseshoes only*
477 between Orpington Station and Crockenhill Road, Crouch Farm only*

* Freedom Passes and English National Concessionary Scheme Bus Passes are not validon routes 402 and 477 before 0930 on Mondays to Fridays.

This information may be changed at any time.

I read on another forum that the 477's validity for certain TfL tickets was due to be removed in March but I've yet to see definitive proof that this has transpired and I'd have expected TfL's document to reflect that change. The 477 is due to lose its evening service between Swanley and Orpington in September when other late evening jnys in Kent will also go. Signed off by KCC in July after a public consultation.

TfL also seem to have forgotten that ENCP is not valid after 11 p.m. on Mondays to Fridays, but that will be academic if the 477 loses its evening service, as the 402 has not had one for decades.

It may be less clear to passengers at Barnet embarking on a Metroline 84 towards Potters Bar and St Albans (and now Luton, but it certainly didn't go there "in my day"!). Oyster cards used to be accepted between Barnet and Potters Bar but no longer, and yet the bus is still red.

Last year I was traveling between Barnet High Street and New Barnet - a double decker arrives in TfL colours, which is fitted with a TfL roundel and Oyster reader, displaying "84" in the windscreen. How could anybody argue that a passenger with an Oyster card should be prevented from travelling on a bus which is carrying a symbol showing that it is valid?

It is not automatically valid. If TfL chooses to let it be valid and reimburses Arriva for this late journey there shouldn't be a problem. There are other local authorities who relax this restriction, either for all passengers or for local ones.

It's not a TfL route - it's Arriva imposing the national restrictions, which certainly include the post 11 p.m. restriction in Kent as in virtually every shire county. Kent County Council are the reimbursers. TfL's only role in this is providing information to the public, and they have either forgotten to mention the Cinderella effect or thought there weren't any applicable journeys.

For boarders in Kent, Kent CC will pay. For boarders in London TfL will pay.

Technically I think it's the London Borough Councils who pay for passengers boarding in Greater London that have a Freedom Pass/ENCTS Pass, rather than TfL. TfL would have to pay for any 60+ Oyster holders, if Arriva accept that pass.

Yes, technically the councils make an annual payment to TfL to offset the cost of the Freedom Pass. My understanding was that TfL then administered any payments due to other bodies.

I believe that for routes operated under a London Service Permit (i.e. non-TfL routes in Greater London) the operator has to deal with the London Councils organisation directly for the ENCTS scheme

There is a TfL bus stop outside Warminster station in Wiltshire.

For the once a year service worked by current and former London buses to Imber on Salisbury Plain. I've never been on it, but I believe there are other stops too, with printed timetables. The buses also carry full blinds for the services worked!

There used to be a London transport bus stop/shelter at Clare Hall (south mimms). It was the terminus of route 298 until it got diverted to Cranborne industrial estate in 2002.
Clare Hall is now serviced by route 398. It now has a HCC stop/shelter but there was a period that the shelter had TfL posters on it hough only served by non-tfl services.
