Quick question: is the Scotsman composed of Mk1 dining and state cars and a couple of Mk3 state cars? Looked like it when I passed it today.

If so, I think it puts paid the notion that Mk3s can't work heritage services.

Here you go, a straight lift from Wikipedia, which I assume is correct on this occasion! I say that only because I would've sworn from seeing it around Scotland each summer that there are more than two mk3 sleepers in the formation.

Eh? Where does that come from, and what are you defining as "heritage"?

There have been loads of 'what will happen to the Mk3' threads, with a lot of people saying that they can't work heritage (read steam) services. But the Royal Scotsman happily mixes Pullman and Mk.3 and few people seem to even notice.

Vacuum braking is the usual problem for heritage operators ruling out Mark 3 stock, but it's not an issue where air braking is available.

As long as the train is air braked and has appropriate electric supply, you can use Mark 3s (subject to usual route clearance). Why would it be anything else?

I didn't think it was - but it's been posted on threads many times. Though, to be honest, it was more about the look and feel. The Royal Scot's Mk3s don't look out of place.

The greater part of the Royal Scotsman is made up of Metro Cammell Pullman cars, built in 1960 for East Coast main line services and rebuilt for Royal Scotsman service in (for the most part) 1990. Other contributors are correct in saying that the consist also includes two mark 3 sleeper vehicles, which house staff accommodation and the onboard generator that provides power to the train.

This is not the only example of mark 3s being used to work heritage services; for a period of time around 2010 Cargo-D also utilised a number of mark 3 first opens and a sleeper vehicle on railtours, and Cotswold Rail operated an HST a couple of years previous to that.

I'd wager a few Mk3 sleepers from the CS will end up in similar 'heritage' rakes to act as staff accommodation and generator cars.

In terms of looks, painting the whole rake a uniform and very deep shade of red helps to mask the origins of the stock in use. Also, a number of the windows on the RS Mk3 carriages have been fitted with openers, thus further confusing matters!

TBH, I've seen the Royal Scot in passing many times and this was the first time I'd noticed the mix of stock. Removing the bodyside door indicator lights probably helps as well.
